History

v2.4F -- Final. Much tweakage on all sorts of things: palettes, maps (most notably in the Marsh Cave), thrusting swords have their own symbol now, minor text changes on the status screen, and one last monster is permanantly gone.

v2.3 -- Not much changed...but much tweakage. Three more monsters permanently gone, with three replacements. Bestiary and toys lists compiled in hypertext format. I did that by Word, 'cuz I'm lazy. If another run-through shows nothing else to be done, this will be the final version, lest certain ideas pop up.

v2.2 -- Many changes. Five-character warrior names, five-character spell names, text changes here there and everywhere. Default party set up. A few palette and bitmap changes. The former Black Belt and Master have a chi-empowered fist. The ADAMANT gives you not the Paladin's most powerful weapon now.

v2.1 -- Disch's Item Shop Enhancer patch applied. Provoka redone. Caravan gone, since the Item Shop Enhancer didn't agree with the encoding for the BOTTLE, BOTTLE moved. Minor tweakage here there and everywhere.

v2.0 -- Elemental system re-vamped. Four elemental attacks: earth, air, fire, and water (go figure). I, of course, had to re-do the weakness and resistances of all the monsters, almost. Time/space element is gone, replaced by lightning. Order of spells received is changed. More spells added/dropped. Tweaked CHAOS as to be appropriately difficult. Massive graphics updates, ripped from numerous FF games, and some drawn by me. Many maps also touched up. The whole deal with the Vampire at Melmond is...a bit different.

v1.2 -- Never got posted by anyone. Don't know why. Oh well. More of the same tweaking and minor bug fixing.

v1.1 -- Nothing quite like finding major bugs after releasing it. Should've done more testing. Should've gone through the game a few times before releasing. Well...they're fixed now.

v1.0 -- Initial release

What is this hack, really?

Just a bunch of things I felt should've been done with the original verision. None of the least of which is how the Thief and Ninja li...er, they did unspeakable things in profane places to unclean animals. I also wanted to fiddle around a bit with the order of things, as to make certain parts of the game more difficult. The elemental system has been re-vamped as well. It's fun now.
Most of the maps are barely touched if even, while some have been completely redone. You should remember your way around. I do not recommend this for rookies, or for those who expect to breeze through the game. It ain't gonna happen. Chaos is anything but fun now.

Why?

I'm still figuring that part out m'self.

Who to thank?

God - for everything, in particular for here, the patience to keep at this madness
Square - for the games, and all those spiffy bitmaps further down the road that look oh-so-much better
Disch - for FFHackster; that made my life oh-so-much easier, and the Shop patch. I've wanted that for years.
SnoBro - for TileLayerPro; also made my life much easier
The guy who did Transhexlation - my choice of hex editor
The guy who did Final Facelift - those bytes made me very happy
all you other FF1 hackers - for giving me something to strive to better, and for some bitmaps; I can't remember what came from where.

Anything for the future?

Well...should the data be found...
I'm trying to find the data concerning the TENT, CABIN, and HOUSE. I'd like to turn the TENT into a Life Potion, or a High Potion. The latter if the first proves impossible.
And...I'd like to get LIFE, LIF2, and SOFT availible in battle. I would obviously step up CHAOS after that took place, so be warned.
And...if possible, I'd like to re-do WARP as to make it a quick escape spell...or something. That may prove impossible.
