REQUIREMENTS
To use this patch, you need the following things:
- A Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX ROM
- HebeGB9x (for applying the patch - instructions are below)
- SMYGB or another Game Boy Color Emulator
All of these (except the ROM) can be found on PR Translations.
USING THE PATCH
Posting the patched ROM on my site is quite difficult, because the file is 1MB and it would be very annoying to have to upload it again every few days. Instead I have posted a patch, which is only a few KB. Another reason for posting a patch is that my site was deleted a while ago, and the fact that I had the ROM on my site was probably the reason. I now recommend HebeGB9x instead of SnesTool, since it is a Windows program and much easier to use. Here are some instructions for applying the patch:
- Run HebeGB9x, and find the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX ROM file on your hard drive.
- Click on this file.
- Click 'IPS Patch ROM'.
- Find the Pokémon of the Past DX patch (which is called POKEP-DX.IPS) and click on it.
- Check the box marked 'Repair Checksum After Fix' (this is to ensure that it will work on any emulator).
- Click 'Patch ROM'
- Finally, answer yes to the question it asks (it will only invalidate the ROM if the patch is messed up, which it isn't)
Important: You MUST patch this to the original Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX ROM, not a version patched with an older patch. Not doing this could cause bugs in the game which wouldn't be there otherwise!
THE STORY
Ash had just achieved what he thought would be the greatest achievement of his life - he had captured Houou. Misty and Tracey both agreed, and they were amazed. They left the building and started to walk to the Pokémon Center to heal Houou and Pikachu, who were both hurt in the battle. Suddenly, Ash saw something in the corner of his eye. It was small, green and sparkly. Misty, Tracey and Pikachu continued walking, but Ash stopped to look. He moved closer, and he saw that it was some kind of Pokémon.
As always, he was determined to capture this strange Pokémon. He sent out Charizard, and everyone around him stared as he released a huge Pokémon to battle something no one else could even see. The green Pokémon closed its eyes as Charizard blasted fire at it. It then started to glow. Ash's eyes filled with a green light, and the Pokémon let loose a high pitched squeal... "Serebi!"
Ash woke up in a bed, in a house. He couldn't see properly, and he wondered if the woman standing above him was his mum. It wasn't, though. As his vision cleared, he saw a man across the other side of the room who looked a lot like Professor Oak. He was called Oak, but he wasn't a professor. Oak gave him a Pokémon to protect him from the wild Pokémon, and Ash set off for the shore where Mr and Mrs Oak found him. Will Ash find out where (or when) he is? And will he ever get back home? Play the game and find out...
WHAT'S CHANGED
The purpose of this game is to make a different style of Pokémon game, without turn-based fighting. Once it is finished, it will be fun to play Pokémon in a whole new environment with different rules! Not much is done yet, so it won't make that much sense, but I'm always improving it! Here is what has been changed:
Latest Updates
- The sword has been changed into a Bulbasaur, although from the front there wasn't much space so you only see his vines (it looks good when you spin the sword round)
- The shield has been changed into a Kakuna
- The chickens have been changed to Pidgeys again (like they were in Version 0.1)
- The dogs have been changed into Nidorans
- Quite a lot of the place and character names are changed all the way through the game
- I've changed the Wind Fish's dialogue at the end (I haven't tested this, but I found it so I changed it)
Text:
- The title screen
- The dialogue at the beginning in Mr and Mrs Oak's house
- Quite a lot of the place and character names are changed all the way through the game
- I've changed the Wind Fish's dialogue at the end (I haven't tested this, but I found it so I changed it)
Sprite graphics:
- Link has been changed to Ash (although he uses Link's weapons, which won't happen in the finished version)
- The strange chickens in the starting town have been changed into Pidgeys
- The dogs have been changed into Nidorans
- The sword has been changed into a Bulbasaur, although from the front there wasn't much space so you only see his vines (it looks good when you spin the sword round)
- The shield has been changed into a Kakuna
Background graphics:
- The trees look like the ones in Pokémon (the overlapping trees are not done yet, but they don't look that bad in the DX version)
- The signposts look like the ones in Pokémon
- The houses look a bit like the ones in Pokémon
- The bushes look like the ones in Pokémon (the Cut HM bushes)

You can also contact me by writing a message on the PR Translations Guestbook (which is on the PR Translations website, where you downloaded this patch)! In case you forgot to bookmark it, the address is:

The following people have also helped with Pokémon of the Past DX:
- Jason Jones drew the font and the various animations of Ash!
- Eric Cameron is writing an excellent storyline for the rest of the game!
Thanks to the people who made Thingy, Relative Search, Tile Layer, SnesTool and Tabular! Without them this wouldn't be possible at all! Also, I want to thank Bung for making the GB X-Changer, because now I can test my hacks on a real Game Boy Color (it works perfectly, by the way)!
