It seems that Ian Schmidt, a large contributor to the project, posted on his website some news that the newest Wine build out of CVS allows for Microsoft Office 2000 to work perfectly... but that's not the good news....

I'm going to download this now, compile it, and provide you with a binary (tar.gz and RPM format). Linux Emu users and authors rejoice!

Emulator Release: Final Burn 0.40 news by
bender
21:59:  Dave updated his multiple arcade emulator, Final Burn, to 0.40. Here's what's new:

  • Galaxy Force II!
  • What was up with the GF palette? Turn out there's a palette reference into an EXTRA palette (a possible 32768 colors), which in turn goes into the normal main palette (16384 colors), which in turn goes into the GLOBAL palette (4 million colors). The word 'nightmare' comes to mind, but it's sorted now! Power Drift almost totally ignores this 'feature' (apart from the spinning wheels), which is why that worked okay.
  • Added a new option for Auto-Centering Keyboard! To use, first you must load up the game you wish to play, bring up the menu panel if it isn't already visible (press Escape), click Input, and then click Keyboard (Auto-Centering). It works really well with Galaxy Force II, Power Drift (in-game anyway!), ThunderBlade and Out Run. For After Burner however, it's much easier to aim if you select the normal Keyboard option.
  • In fact, Keyboard with Auto-Centering works so well that I have also made it the default. People who want to use a joystick should now configure games by clicking Input and then Joystick 1 (only need to be done once per game).
Note, now F = Burners, G = Brakes (or you can use A and Z if you are using Joystick 1 2-button or Keyboard.)
  • The Galaxy Force Hardware uses a powerful tilt/rotate effect, which isn't emulated yet.
  • Lot's of glitches - don't e-mail, I know about them!
  • Galaxy Force II uses a LOT of sprites in the tunnel sections (each wall has about 50-100 sprites). It slows down my computer, so you probably do need a P3 this time (for the tunnel sections anyway). A shame.

You can download it from our Multiple Arcade section.

Misc. News: Singer Creates IZEK System news by
stickfig
20:26:  Surprise your mother! Amaze your friends! Make... a quilt. Do it all with your GameBoy!

Recently, I read a story on everyone's second-favorite site (behind ours), Slashdot that talks about a new system being developed by Singer (you know, the sewing machine company) with the help of Nintendo. The Singer IZEK system includes a GameBoy add-on cartridge. The cartridge and sewing machine include these features for GameBoy and sewing fans alike to salivate over:

After this was the slogan for the IZEK which I thought was pretty funny considering what it entailed:
...and you thought there was nothing new in sewing!

My responce to that: If that's how sewing fans feel, just imagine what gamers will think when they buy this peripheral. This makes even less sense than that exercise machine hook-up for the Super NES. At least that made some sense.

Check out SlashDot's article and post a few comments about this interesting add-on on our Talk of the Town message board.

Utility Release: Lunar Magic 1.02 news by
xip
08:52:  A new version of Lunar Magic, a Super Mario World editor, has been released, and here's what's new:

  • fixed a bug that I suspect was causing an overlapping level problem for many people. Apparently when saving a level to the ROM, Lunar Magic wasn't storing the last address used to the ROM until after you did another ROM operation. Which means if you went and saved a level, immediately exited LM (or reloaded the ROM), then later came back and saved a different level without changing the address that showed up, you'd often end up over-writing the first level. I can't believe I never noticed this bug until now... O_O

Get it at the facelift utilities page. Thanks to Darknight16 for the news.

aardwolf
00:18:  I was checking out the bleem! page a couple of days ago and noticed that it hadn't changed in MANY months. Well, I looked at it tonight, and noticed that bleem! is now shipping to Europe. From their homepage:

In an effort to lower the outrageous shipping costs that everyone in Europe has had to endure in our first year, we have now come up with a way to lower your costs by warehousing the product and shipping it from the UK.

So select your location, see the savings, be...be the savings and enjoy the savings by golly!

Don't forget that the web is the only way to buy bleem! in the UK. Even though we have sold 300,000 units of bleem! worldwide for some reason the UK retail outlets seem a little shy, a little reluctant, a little afraid even, I wonder why....
If you've been waiting for cheaper shipping prices in Europe, visit http://www.bleem.com and order your copy today!

It's a non-paying "job" but it's not like I expect people to be cranking reviews out like mad. Expect to do 3-5 reviews a week at least, and of course more is good. To see the beginnings of the site, go to http://www.vgrc.bizland.com. To apply for the "job", just send me an email at cragman77@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Emulator News: Sintendo Gets a Release Date news by
bender
18:00:  Sintendo, the port of SNES9x to the Dreamcast, is scheduled to be released on October, 7 2000 according to the author:

Sorry to have to do this to you guys - I know you've all been waiting very patiently - but I'm going to hold off the release of Sintendo until October 7th, the deadline.

This buys me some time to iron out the problems, make sure it works and works well, type out some burning instructions, and deal with all the other tiny details that must be taken care of.

After that, I am taking a week off to reassemble my life, get a job, study for classes, et cetera. I have neglected every day living for so long I need some catching up to do. You guys should be more than satisfied to play one or two SNES games on the Dreamcast for a week until I start working on menu code.

If there are any major problems with the first release, I will try to solve those on an as-needed basis. But I do not intend to start adding other features to Sintendo until the weekend of the 14th.

You can read the statement at the Sintendo Homepage.

I know there are smart and witty people out there, so help :) This core is a LOT faster than my old C core, but there are a LOT more bugs, most of which I don't have the time to stomp out. I know it's hard for you to work on the core without the other part of gleam, but if you can do it, then I will appreciate your help.
    I can't wait to see what's next.

You can download it from the Gleam Homepage.

13:28:  The page that contains Cowering's GoodXXX ROM verifying utilities has been updated in several ways. First, a new version (v1.7) of GoodWindows, a frontend for the DOS-based utilities, has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Fixed bug that was making goodwindows to save the file you need when you clicked on the file he need.
  • Updated option enabled for GoodINTV (for the GoodINTV released not too long ago).
  • Now Allow you to delete the *.txt file only if they exits, otherwise the menu items is disabled.
  • Allow you to save the Listing of rom to a txt file (Through the Popup Menu)
  • Added a module that allow you to find in which folder a rom is (When using the dirs option). Useful to find a rom on a fserve or on a ftp. Find this under the tool menu. (Be sure to use the appropriate case.
  • Added Support for New Option available in GoodSnes. (SEP_ etc...).
  • Changed the way the option are enabled and disabled (much better, but could contain bug... please watch that. If you see any option that should be disabled at a certain moment but isn't, let me know).
  • The execute button now show the exact command line that will be run.

Also, new versions of Good2600 (v0.999.4) and GoodGen (v0.999) have been released, and GoodMO5 (v0.999) has been added. You can get them at the GoodXXX page.

Emulator Release: Final Burn 0.031 news by
bender
00:20:  Final Burn has been updated to 0.031. Here's what's new:

  • Fixed the difficulty setting of PD to normal.
  • Added support for the Triple-68000 game Power Drift! You need a very fast PC to run this game fullspeed (a Pentium 3).
  • Sound support for Power Drift (the easiest part believe it or not!)
  • It is very playable on a Pentium 3, but... - ...there are many glitches all over the game. I've also noticed that the whole display doesn't tilt. I have noticed all the problems, so please don't report any to me (otherwise I'll be reading my e-mail forever)!
  • Modified the After Burner HW so that the controls are read 'properly' using interrupts rather than just inserted into memory (cheers to Phil from the MAME team for noticing this!). For the user, you'll see no difference, but the emulation is more accurate.
  • Fixed that occasional "vertical banding" problem that JoseQ and some others were having in the scanlines mode - it wasn't anything to do with bilinear filter after all!

You can download it at our Multiple Arcade page.

Misc. News: But It Could Never Happen To Me... news by
swampgas
19:43:  Well kids...it did. I need to get this off my chest. I totalled my car about an hour ago. Why? Deer jumped out in front of me.

    "But what about anti-lock brakes?"

Nopers. The automotive place that serviced it YESTERDAY (and did $700 worth of work) apparently didn't do a thing. The anti-lock brake warning light was on the entire trip, so, when I saw Bambi jump into the road, I heard screeeeetch instead of that vibrating noise the ALBs make. And yes, seat belts DO save lives...I would have kissed the windshield had I not been wearing it (no bruises, no pain, no nothing...I'm perfectly fine). Bambi went about 15 feet in the air and flew about 20 feet infront of me (only was doing 40mph in a 40mph zone).

A word to PETA and animal lovers: I hate deer...that stupid animal cost me my car. I hope Bambi dies a horrible death. I hope Bambi is still twitching in pain on the side of the road. That car was a gift from my grandfather that I'd been waiting for ever since the day he bought it.

Goodbye, 1988 Acura Legend, license plate "SWMPGAS". You will be missed.

I took some pics incase I decide to sue (and for insurance company purposes), so if you'd like to see my baby, here they are (it may not look like much...but...it's an old car):

    #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9.

Emulator News: Sintendo Progress news by
bender
17:47:  Sintendo, the port of SNES9x to the Dreamcast, is now playable on the Dreamcast:

Breaktrough. This time it was by myself. The games weren't playing because the ROMs weren't loading correctly. Fixed. I pulled a roommate into my room to show him how far I've gotten, telling him "there's an off chance it might work". We watched anxiously as it gave me line after line of good information, then... boom: Nintendo. Illusion of Gaia, actually an accidental pick, its a favorite of one of my roommates (another roommate). This was the first game I saw run on the Dreamcast, Build #93. I've since gotten up to Build #97 and I've seen Zelda and Super Mario World run as well. None of them run particularly well as the system is kindof "flaky". It tends to crash and I think I know why. I'm much too tired tonight to figure it out, but I'll get on it tommorrow.

Emulation is kindof slow. I should be able to improve that as well, but it was plenty fast enough for me to play a little Super Mario World.

I'm sorry to all you slow modem guys for doing that to you, but this is some neat stuff! These shots were taken through my TV card so the quality, unfortunately is poor, but you can certainly get the idea. The Utopia shot is used for reference and in case anyone doesn't believe it's not actually running on the Dreamcast. Beta release once I press over the last few details.

You can see the statement and screenshots at the Sintendo homepage.

Emulator News: Sintendo Progress news by
bender
15:48:  The homepage of the port of SNES9x to the Sega Dreamcast, Sintendo, has been updated with some good news and a few screenshots from A Link to The Past. Here is a quote from the author regarding the progress of his port:

A friend of mine, who programs a little, came over today and sat and watched me program for about 4 or 5 hours, giving me idea, helping me talk why way through problems and generally being a great asset. Thank you, Shawn, for your help. I acomplished some really good things in those hours, solving two or three of the several problems that have risen while trying to move my code over to the Dreamcast. The first was memory, which I'd imagined would be a problem anyways, which is now temporarily solved until after I get some code running. The second was that the Snes9x code didn't load the ROM file correctly due to incompatibility with UNICODE. It took some messing arround with the WinCE system calls, but it finally loads the ROM correctly and initializes all of the memory structures Snes9x needs. I've played with a few graphic scenarios and finally found one I like and is both compatible with the PC and the Dreamcast at high speeds. While the Dreamcast code does not yet output Snes9x graphics, it should soon. The bonus side of this is that the PC code now runs at a full 60 fps, on a PIII 450 with a mediocre graphics card. It didn't budge from 60 for even a second.

You can read the whole statement, and see the impressive screenshots, at the Sintendo homepage.

Site News: A few changes news by
swampgas
05:53:  Just wanted to let everyone know that I had to remove some of the old files off of the server (ZD is a little over 3 gig). The storage unit was at 99% capacity, and we couldn't risk it being completely filled. So, until we can afford to get another drive shelf for it (between $7,000 and $10,000), those files will remain on another harddrive on another server.

This shouldn't affect ZD at all, since I made sure these files weren't linked on any html pages. But, as with anything, theres bound to be errors. If you notice anything missing that should be here, email me so I can copy it back over.

We'll put all the old files back eventually, since the new system we're implementing will optionally list all the old versions of files along with the current releases.

Of course, if anyone out there happens to have a spare Network Appliance drive shelf sitting around, I'll pay for shipping...

22:19:  This is going to be a new post type on ZD, things that accumulated over time, and we just didn't know where to put 'em, so we put them here. Tell us what you think about it, as this is as much your site as it is ours.

It seems like Gridle has updated the MAME WIP page once again with new chocolatey goodness. Zoop has announced that the EPR, the Emulation Programmer's Resource, has returned... so all of you of the budding emulation programmer persuasion can go check it out. It also seems that there's a new PacMAME coming out soon, and boy is it a biggie... I also perused the MAME32 whatsnew32.txt, and found about the new marquee images option (marquee images can be found at the closet2mame page). Retrogames had a post on two new utilities for VESA 3.0-compliant cards (most Nvidia cards, and 3dfx Cards), called UNIrefresh and VBEPlus. seems that these are a viable free substitute for Scitech Display Doctor. Check it out. and Finally, Mystery Videogame Theatre 3000 has been updated with a review of quite possibly the worst SNES game ever released, Super 3D Noah's Ark. much like a car crash, it's too entertaining to ignore.
