Part of the problem with the human machine is its tendency to see patterns where they don't exist. Although we're quite good at pattern recognition in general (this is why it took so long to write a chess program to beat the best humans), our software has to make some compromises in accuracy to achieve its great sensitivity. As a result, people will sometimes falsely detect faces on the moon, codes in manuscripts, and vocal patterns in random noise.
The good news is that we also have error detection software for this sort of thing. It's called logic. The people who made this movie don't seem to know how to use it.

The other troublesome thing about the human machine is its constant need to search for meaning. The side effect of being smart enough to recognize your own existence is that you're also smart enough to recognize non-existence. Not only do you realize that it's possible for the world to exist without you, you discover that it had in the past and will again in the future. It seems the picture of futility.
Thus, we spend our lives searching for something deeper. This fact has been exploited by countless con artists and power-mongers and, when combined with herd instincts (we tend to attach ourselves to perceived authority figures), it has been the undoing of many a helpless soul. Cultists, terrorists, conspiracy theorists, astrologers -- they all exploit these tendencies.
Do I think there are things beyond the realm of science? Absolutely. Do I think there is much for science left to discover? Of course. Do I think dead people are talking to us through static? Fuck no.

The idea isn't that they talk *through* the static (at least in real EVP), the idea is that they are there all the time, and the mic just happens to pick it up.

Yes I remember that and it freaked the hell out of me and took me about six months to forget about it
