Default Antivir 7 - blows chunks all the way

I've been an Antivir user for the past two years or so - I always considered it the best freeware Antivirus around. It didn't take up too much CPU time, it didn't mess with anything unless you told it to, and you could update it whenever you wished.

This week, Antivir 7 was released... and it's crap. Pure. Utter. Crap. Sure, the antivirus works, but what happens when the program keeps insisting you update to the pro version? What happens when you realize that it's fucked up your DVD drive access speed, making it run at HALF speed? (I can't rip a CD at anything over 4-8x, and this is a 48x drive!). Well, in my case, I decide to look for a better alternative.

What do you suggest I use? I'm an XP user and don't know of any other programs which are any good. Until Antivir gets its act together, I'm not using it.

How's it doing this? Is it doing some heurestic (spelling?) scan of every little bit of any disk that's being accessed? O_o

*edit*
AVG is pretty good, I've found it to be pretty good with resources.

AVG or Winpooch with ClamAV if you're an Open Source fanatic.

I've been using http://free.grisoft.comAVG</a> for years. If it means anything to you, it's the only free antivirus considered as good as commercial software by PC World. Despite this, my father-in-law still insists on using his shitty System Suite antivirus, and he's the one who got me the subscription to PC World in the first place (it's pretty much crap---good thing it's free). Why do people (including my wife) balk at the idea of using free antivirus software? I dunno. I guess they don't get the business model of free for personal use, but not free for corporate use.

Oh, and lots of people seem to like http://www.avast.comAvast</a>.

nothing. If you're a smart user, you should never run into a virus. Also, most ISPs/mail providers filter out any bad attachments anyway, so there isn't much to worry about.

anti virus software is ofr people like joe Bob who doesn't know a malicious file if it was slapped in his face.

I'm a Windows user.

THE ENTIRE FUCKING OPERATING SYSTEM IS A GLORYHOLE WHERE VIRUSES CAN COME IN EASILY.

I'm smart enough to know what to download and what to look out for. But for everything else that's caused by the OS' faults? An antivirus is a good backup solution.

I don't know! It made Nero slow as hell, and audio ripping is insanely slow now.

I'll give AVG a try. I thought it was commercial, though.

I tried Avast once; it said most of my emulators and romhacking tools were viruses. :P

I'll be trying out AVG in a bit.

if you have a decent firewall you shouldn't be concerned.

Windows can be secure as shit if you know what you're doing
