Idea for playing ISOs on actual consoles without using CDs.

I was thinking to myself, which is my favorite way, that it may be, could be, should be possible to create an interface between a PC and a console by removing the CD/DVD/whatever-ROM drive from a console and hacking up a cable that replaces it which communicates with a PC through a USB2 port or similar. When the system sends a call to read from the CD-ROM drive, it gets sent to the PC, which has a program running that "emulates" a CD-ROM drive with an ISO file. It reads each call, then sends the appropriate data back through the cable into the console. The silly console thinks it's actually getting data back from a real CD-ROM drive! Now you don't need to worry about your fucking third Playstation's CD-ROM drive crapping out again!

Is this possible? I would have thought it would have been done if there wasn't some major hitch to this.
