Problem burning video dvds

Ok Tmepgenc has me on my last nerve. Basically it is shit. It will convert the movies from avi to .mpeg just fine 99% of the time, but at least half the time the finished mpeg has no audio track. I try ripping the audio from the source with virtual dub and having the program add it while converting, it says that the .wav file virtual dub makes is an unrecognized file format. So does Ulead Movie Studio for that matter. So I need some suggestions on decent, fairly easy to use (I'm a newb after all) programs that will actually fucking work when I want them to.

If you want a prog that will turn an avi(s) into a dvd DVDSanta is really, really easy. It can burn it as well, it makes the Video_TS folder, or you could burn with nero, or whatever. I have also heard that Nero Vision Express works rather well, but I tried and failed so I just stick with DVDSanta
