I haven't used it but the page says "it collapses the Google left sidebar by default with the option to expand". This script was also updated 10 hrs ago, "you'll see this right next to the authors name" , so it's a new script just for what you would like done.
And, if you want Google search results without Googles´ "bigbrotherlike" tracking and scanning your surf-behaviour - try Scroogle. They even have SSL-encrypted plugins for your Firefox Searchbar.

You could always install Stylish and then download one of the tons of google styles. Like you guessed it is just a program that uses custom CSS files for your browser. You can use either global styles or particular site styles like Google or Facebook or you can make your own.
You could also try ixquick. HTTPS connection (uses AES-256), doesn't record your IP address, officially supports the Firefox searchbar (among others), and seems to produce pretty solid search results.
How exactly does Google suck? If you can't find what you're looking for then it's probably your inability to properly craft search criteria. Google works just as well for me now as it always has.
