Goddamnit I just got in a great mood! See, since the beginning of this year my motivation as far as class attendance goes went down the tubes. To the point where I ended up missing 2 tests . Up until about 5 minutes ago, I was considering how to tell mom and dad that I was going to have to probably switch schools, or something of the sort. Then I was lucky enough to read the syllabus for the courses I thought I was screwed in. One of them has 4 tests which in total counts for 50%. Which means that if I ace the rest of the tests, I can still pass with a pretty good grade. The other one only counts 3 of the 4 tests, which means I can still get an A in that class despite my fuck up. Now there is just the matter of Computer Science, which it turns out I have no talent at. Whee! Guess I should probably reconsider that as my major huh?

I know it well:
Step 1: Get really lazy and neglect all sorts of shit until it becomes potentially problematic.
Step 2: Freak out and worry constantly.
Step 3: Realize that you barely missed anything or can still make it up. Get all happy again.
I'm afraid that's a sign of depression or anxiety disorder. Welcome to the club!

Also, I wouldn't recommend it for someone with mood swings. Getting very little exercise and sitting by yourself for most of the day is practically suicide for people like us. Astrophysics is bad enough, I can't imagine how excruciating comp sci would be for me. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

That is why I am (potentially) going to have Japanese as minor. Since I actually have some sort of interest in that, as compared to Comp Sci which just sort of happened.

Awww...c'mon, it wasn't THAT bad....I mean, other than spending endless hours debuggin the adaptor code you wrote and can't figure out why the sockets you programmed the day before aren't working anymore, and then finally relizing that you're server process you wrote the week before died for no reason and linux conveniently forgets to tell you about it and you practically go nuts and destroy the computer? Eh....it wasn't....uhhh....tooo...excruciating....

Well considering that the school I am attending is one of the most accredited tech schools in my state, and that they have around a 85-90% rate of students in all of their programs getting hired into their field by companies shortly after they graduate, I am not really too worried about the job factor.
And if the job market for Comp Sci crashes, I will (hopefully) have the minor in Japanese to fall back on. Translators and the like are always fairly decent paying jobs.

that's not what i mean. people are taking "computer science" and "information technology" (stupid names which make no sense) because they think they'll get employment and riches. they have no desire to learn it, study it, get involved with it, etc. that's why you have such shitty software...it's not being developed by nerds. it's being developed by some people who read a text book and then think they're master computer technicians.

thats part of the economy issue
1) its mainly those Certification programs and "non-college" techinical colleges that are really the blame as far as education schools go
2) also its partly due to everyone thinking they could get rich off selling shit online, REMEMBER THE DOT-BOMBS, people thought they could get rich selling toilet paper on the 'net
3) H1-B visa workers, even as we speak the gov't is giving Visas to lots of foreign workers (mainly from India) because "there is a shortage or high-skilled IT workers" BULLSHIT! how many people got laid off in 2001 alone? It was a strategy plotted by CORPORATE america, they wanted to flood the fucking market, to bring salaries down of IT people,
There wasnt too many jobs back in the 90s you could of gotten paid as good with just a Bachelors Degree than CompSci , Engineering, and perhaps some Business majors (finance, marketing, all that boring business shit), and maybe psychology or something
but the corporations knew they could ruin it and they have, as such they can hire better people for less now, as they have successfully flooded the market,
ok, know I guess I went off on a tangent but its a subject that still brings up some frustation of the past with me, 2001 was hell for the IT industry and employees (still hasnt changed much either)

I don't really want to get rich. Well at least not through programming. I just want to graduate from here with that degree because it can get me a decent paying job. Once I save up enough doing that, my real desire is to run my own small business doing something or other. You know, like those independently run comic book stores you see.

How come you never told me any of this? You asked me at the beginning of the school year to make sure that you go. I've tried to that as best as I can but your just as subborn as me. From now on I guess I'm really going to have to act like Naru when it comes to that.
P.S. I also like how you wait till I get sick and can't come on the computer to post this.
