i'm looking for a cheap laptop for <£300 and my mom wont buy online, so it'll have to be from a shop. any ideas?

tell your mom to remove that tin foil hat off her head. Buying online is pretty damn safe. I built my entire rig(almost) from parts off of newegg.
actually, come to think of it, I don't think there's a UK equivalent to newegg...
also, I don't think you will get anything decent for less then 300 pounds
anything good would be over 400

It still costs hundreds for a brand spanking new CPU and those Intel guys don't play mind games with that.
The only exception of playing cheap would be to survey any hardware that is sold or auctioned off eBay - and then if you're not confident with what they sell, go to newegg.com or even tigerdirect.com ! I only went to tigerdirect for a cheap 1GB RAM upgrade for my notebook but maybe you might find something there, too.
If you have enough money to go all out with a gaming system, watch your step on ibuypower and cyberpowerpc!
