I just got to thinking, I gained 60 pounds since last January. What the fuck? I weighed 180 now I'm 240, and I don't look any different. It doesn't look like I gained or lost weight, and what's weird is that I wear the same size clothes that I wore before. Some people say it looks like I lost a lot of weight, too. The only thing I noticed was that my gut kinda got a little bigger, but I really don't look like I would weigh 240.

Regardless of whether or not I look like what the scale indicates, I have decided to go on a diet to lose some of the unwanted pounds. I started to drink more water instead of soda and began to cut down on what I eat at work. I also began to slowly convert from regular milk to soy milk. Instead of two breakfast sandwiches and a donut, I eat one bagel with nothing on it, a handful of munchkins and I wash everything down with a nice 32oz cup of water. And I take my multi-vitamins and ginseng everyday.

The only major road block on my way to success is that I really don't exercise as much as I should. I don't consider wacking the weasel to be of much exercise. And the fact that I just ate five pieces of pizza doesn't help.

Does anyone have any tips for my new diet?

If you're not too active, you should stop eating a few hours before bed. I lost 55 pounds last summer doing that and little else. Lifting weights is always good, plus there's an outside chance you'll get ripped.

Get some fresh vegetables in your diet, especially green leafy veggies.

I know you know this, but you have to exercise. That is what is going to raise your metabolism and help you burn off the calories you're intaking.

Get a pulse meter and figure out what your target heart rate should be. You can find documentation on this around the web, but basically what you need to do is get your heartrate up through exercise like jogging or bicycling for a certain amount of time each week.

You could maybe even do some light weight lifting or kinesthetics (sp?) or if you're so inclined, yoga. All of these will help tone you up and adding a little muscle will really help burn calories.

You obviously are on the right track though. The switch from regular to soy milk really shows me that because almost nobody ever thinks of that. Losing weight takes diet and exercise and exercise takes motivation and will-power. Good luck!

Eat as much of anything you want, except no carbohydrates. My dad and brother have both lost about 30 lbs on the thing and feel better than they have in years. Also, if you care to know, Atkins makes a strong physiological case for why it works.

I don't have the discipline to do the vegetarian edition (difficult!), so I'll probably stay semi-chunky for a bit.

Indeed. You won't believe so many of the things you eat that are loaded with carbs. Those carbs hardly get any use nowadays and they become fat. So just eat a lot of protein (like nuts and stuff) instead of breads or pastas and you'll slim down.
