In what's my first hex edit EVER, I successfully hacked the U.S. version of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon! I'm so happy.

Anyway, I was playing in VisualBoy Advance, and I was getting tired of killing the same enemy a lot of times JUST to get some piece of crap armor. I went into that "search for cheats" dialog, and started looking for a certain 16-bit value. After narrowing it down to three hex strings with identical values, I determined that these were the strings for your character's luck stat, which determines the frequency of item drops. So with the help of good ol' Windows Calulator, I converted the number 750 to a hex value, which came out to 02EE. Replace the current values of the game's hex strings with 02EE, and viola! 750 luck.

For anyone interested, here's the codes to enter:

02025565e:02ee
02025660:02ee
02025662:02ee

What does a bowed string instrument have to do with video game hacking?

I think it means that you replace the hex strings with viola strings. I thought it was obvious.

I have also experienced difficulty/impossibility finding items in the Circle of the Moon game. I will additionally support the suggestion that it's more fun to cheat the game into giving you items than to simply cheat them into your possession. Although now that I've looked, my Driedrac's luck is already 755, so clearly there's still a way to go.

Cheat hacking can be fun...I've found some neat stuff doing that kind of thing before. For example...before my Datel 'Trainer Toolkit' broke (sigh)...by the way, it resides in the GBA slot is basically a USB interface that lets you read out the memory of the DS...I was rooting through the memory of the DS game Lunar Knights, and hacked myself some of the japanese only items (names were no longer in existence, but the items still seemed to work). I also activated the lost terrenial, Warrock. It seems he was activated in the Japanese version though a crossover with one of the DS Rockman games (there are also items you can get via hacking that belong to those sidequests).

Sadly, his programming seemed to be mostly deleted (he doesn't have any of his special attacks), but you can still use him to fight enemies and have him following you around on the screen like the others.

Yes, I replace hex strings with a viola's strings...yep.

I had a problem with the new values: even though it shows that my character's LCK stat is at 750, the item drops are just as common as the old value, which was 220.

By the way, what the hell is a Driedrac?

Wow. You just notice about 5 posts AFTER the fact. I don't care how it's spelled. I knew what I was trying to say. Oh, and thanks for the sarcasm.

This thread is more suited for the rom hack board.

Yeah, I didn't think before I posted. Thanks, Reaper man.

I used to say, cheating is a ROM hackers best friend. I used to use PAR and GG codes all of the time to track down ROM offsets to data and code. Especially in the old days using NESticle and .pat files as a converter of sorts.

I'm glad that I know how to use that method. If a console system does not have a debugger, I can sometimes use cheats. Sometimes you can take a few bytes of the string out of the RAM viewer and search in the ROM and find results.

However, some would argue that cheating is not ROM hacking persay. I tend to disagree with that assessment as I've used cheating and ROM hacking hand in hand for along time. I've had better luck with cheating in comparison to ROM corruption methods, and other methods. Messing around with cheating devices can also teach you assembly.

Rattlehead: Congrats on your success.

Rattlehead and Xeon3D: This site just got started again. Can we try not to pollute the board with bickering over this kind pointless shit? Thanks.

I agree. No need to fight over this stuff.
