I'm tempted to get into PS2 emulation. But i'll have to purchase some games as my bandwith doesn't allow for downloads of that magnitude.
So how is this coming along? Is PCSX2 (http://www.pcsx2.net/) the most current?
Depending on feedback, I may pick up a title that is rated as compatible and give it a go.

Yep. AFAIK, there's not much else around really.

Although I really wouldn't recommend this as an alternative to a PS2 (this is really looking like UltraHLE-style emulation, which is a total fucking nightmare), I may be trying it myself due to PS2 games being region-coded, and Sony's insistence that the PS3 backward compatibility must keep the region-coding restrictions (which gives me even less reason to shell out all that money).

That almost sounds counter productive. I have nothing against you buying games or anything, but buying a game so you can play it with an emulator (probably poorly)? That just doesn't sound right. You'd probably be better off spending that money on a better connection if anything.

do you buy stuff from http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-1wp6.htmlplay-asia? if you do, help a bro out and buy from that link :)

Well I did want to get your feedback first. ;)
sounds like it isn't worth it yet. as for the spending money issue, i'd rather spend none. :)
but if and when PS2 emulation becomes a more viable option, i could still see myself picking up a few select used games at the mom and pop video game shop... and then trading them back in if i'm able to copy them. in which case i am paying for expediency since even at high bandwith, most multiple gig bit torrents are going to take a while.

Keep an eye on later versions of psx (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/). The author has been hinting at working on PS2 implementation for quite some time now. pSX is an awesome emulator, and if it's PS2 support is anything like its PSX support, it will be nice and accurate. Of course, accurate PS2 emulation will pretty much necessitate more CPU power than anyone's got right now, but oh well...

that's awesome. i love PSX.

true. as I was playing through the history of console gaming and emulation in my mind i realized that i am jumping the gun on this one.
that and the fact that i haven't even beat most of the PS1 rpgs yet means i don't really care how long it takes. i'm in for a good gaming trip anyway.

Now, I don't have personal experience, but I've heard reports from someone on IRC in one of the chans connected to Elazul's Pad that he was running FF XII I think it was, and it was running fairly well (some bugs, but his report and the screenies he showed us looked pretty damn good) and running at a decent pace.
Apparently this is done with a plug-in for PCSX2 that has special support for dual core CPUs, hence the speed that sounds impossible. :)
