View Full Version : patching problem: 4 ips files?
I downloaded a translation patch for Tales of Phantasia (SNES), but it came with 4 ips files. I tried each of them, and the game is still not translated. Can anyone help me?

My first guess would be that the copy of the game you are trying to use has no header. From the patch's readme:

In reply to:

Û ³ How to Patch ³ Û
Û ³ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ³ Û
Û ³ The patch requires an original Japanese rom with a 512 byte header, ³ Û
Û ³ making it 6,291,968 bytes in size. If the rom is only 6,291,456 ³ Û
Û ³ bytes, it does not have a header. Included are patches for both the ³ Û
Û ³ interleaved and non-interleaved roms. Use the format conversion ³ Û
Û ³ programs to determine if your rom is interleaved or not. ³ Û

Now, TOP_gd patches are for interleaved ROMs, TOP_dx patches are for non-interleaved ROMs. After you are sure the ROM has a header, you can either try ONE of the gd or dx patches and see what works, or you could use something like SNEStool to check and see (look in the utils section of this site).
This'll also tell you if it has a header. Also, if none of this works, try downloading NSRT and letting NSRT monkey with it. Try the repair option, apparently there is a very common dump of Tales of Phantasia that is a bit b0rked, it won't work for the purposes of patching in this translation.

I tried adding a header, repairing the header, and both times I tried one of each file type, but nothing's worked. What should I do now?

I would go http://nsrt.edgeemu.com/forum/portal.phphere and use this program, NSRT, to verify your ROM. To make things simple, use the frontend included with the program and copy the ROM (unpatched of course) into the same folder as NSRT....go into the Options and make sure "Deinterleave" and "Fix Certain broken ROMs" are checked under the "ROM Fixing" tab.
I'd also select "Add empty header" in the "Header" tab to make sure that the ROM has a header if you don't think it has one (alternatively, check the output when you click the ROM and pick scan to see if it has a header, then click add empty header and rescan if it does not). All the other options are pretty much your preference (ie, do you want it to save the file into a zip file, and so on).
After this, apply one of the patches meant for de-interleaved ROMs. If your ROM is good this program will verify it, and if it's one of the common slightly busted dumps of the ROM it will likely be able to tell and it'll fix it for you. If it doesn't recognize it at all, go download a copy of it from a different site, as that probably means your ROM is fubared beyond all help. :)
