I attend a Pokemon forum, and someone has proposed if it's possible to trade from the GameBoy versions to the GameBoy Advance versions. While I'm certain it is possible (just a simple data transfer, interpretation, and placement in the right spots), the problem is the fact that the games don't know each other.
So I'm going out of my way to explain to this person that it's just not worth going through the trouble of actually creating something that would interpret data. Oh and he wants this using real games, not ROMs (it'd just be easier to do through ROMs). The problems I came up with are the following:
1. The games don't know each other, so if one wanted to build a GameBoy to GameBoy Advance adapter, the adapter would have to have something that gives the games a false positive on a compatibility check.
2. One has to know how transferring works on both the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance (which I'm certain is different, and I have the strangest feeling that attempting to cable link on a GBA to a GB game is impossible).
3. One has to know how Pokemon manages data.
Then he proposed to just write a dummy program into a flash cart.
Considering this pertains more about the hardware of the Gameboys rather than the software itself, please tell me that doing something like this is just not worth the time and effort it'll take to make something. I want some one who knows more about emulation than me so I can tell this chum to just drop the subject (because he keeps persisting on wanting his old Pokemon transferred).
