View Full Version : Pokemon trading "problem"

I attend a Pokemon forum, and someone has proposed if it's possible to trade from the GameBoy versions to the GameBoy Advance versions. While I'm certain it is possible (just a simple data transfer, interpretation, and placement in the right spots), the problem is the fact that the games don't know each other.

So I'm going out of my way to explain to this person that it's just not worth going through the trouble of actually creating something that would interpret data. Oh and he wants this using real games, not ROMs (it'd just be easier to do through ROMs). The problems I came up with are the following:

1. The games don't know each other, so if one wanted to build a GameBoy to GameBoy Advance adapter, the adapter would have to have something that gives the games a false positive on a compatibility check.
2. One has to know how transferring works on both the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance (which I'm certain is different, and I have the strangest feeling that attempting to cable link on a GBA to a GB game is impossible).
3. One has to know how Pokemon manages data.

Then he proposed to just write a dummy program into a flash cart.

Considering this pertains more about the hardware of the Gameboys rather than the software itself, please tell me that doing something like this is just not worth the time and effort it'll take to make something. I want some one who knows more about emulation than me so I can tell this chum to just drop the subject (because he keeps persisting on wanting his old Pokemon transferred).

That sounds like a stupid waist of time.
I assume it could be done by hacking a version of Pokemon for the Advance generation so that it interperats scent data from Pokemon R/B/Y/G/S/C into Pokemon S/R/E/FR/LG data. Then moddifing your the older GB/C so it can send data over cables to the GBA (GB/C uses differant cables that are incompatable with a GBA).
So in essents you have a hacked rom of Pokemon S/R/E/FR/LG, that can interperate transfer data from Pokemon R/B/Y/G/S/C and send correct signs back to it to properly transfer the data, on a flashcart. Then you simply trade the pokemon to the none hacked version on a differant GBA.

Or you could just write a program that reads pokemon save data on in your Pokemon GB/C version save file and converts them into the pokemon save data for your Pokemon GBA version save file, then simply dump the Pokemon save file from you GB/C cart and convert it and upload your new save file with a dumped rom of GBA version to a flash cart and transfer the pokemon to your actualy cart.

The later makes so much more sence, you only need a Pokemon GB/C version, Pokemon GBA version, a GB/C/A Rom dumper and GBA Flash cart, a computer, and a simple program you built. Your friend sounds like and idiot for trying it the hard way.

It'd be much easier to do this on a ROM or something, and the way you mentioned sounds like dumping the actual games to the ROM format and upping them to the cart.

But I don't think he wants that way. He wants it as easy as hooking up a cable link to two GBA's and doing a regular trade... which is impossible unless I worked for Game Freak and knew what the hell I was doing.

This just seems so stupid. Why not just use a GameShark or something to make a new Pokemon with the same stats as the one you would be trading?

Easy? Haha ha tell him to hack Pokemon for the GBA and Mod his old Gameboy/Colour to except GBA transfer cables first. And then ask him if he thinks the hard wear version is easier.

Hum good point, though my realistic method was simply to create a save editor for Pokemon S/R/E/FR/LG that alows upload of Pokemon R/B/Y & G/S/C saves. Easier to deal with from an interface stand point but ultimatly more work from most stand points when a GameShark would saffice, and you don't even need a flashcart.
