View Full Version : Old DOS ROM patching tools in XP

For the first time in a long time, I made a new compilation of ROMs for my SNES copier. I have one of those CD-ROM caddies for my DX2, so I burned a nice big CD with lots of new translations and stuff on it. The trouble is, I have noticed that a huge number of the games that I just patched or converted with insnest or snestool for the new collection are messed up, when they really shouldn't be. The original ROMs were good, and the patches were appropriate. I took care of the headers, everything. But some games won't save, and others won't load. What I'm wondering is, is it possible that the old DOS tools that I used don't work right in XP? I made my previous compilation on a windows 95 system, and the games I prepared at that time worked well then and now.
If XP is messing up these tools, is there some kind of alternative for IPS patching, slowROM fixing, format converting and protection cracking that I can use on an XP system?

Dosbox can be used for more than just gaming.
I had to go that way when applying the texture patches to star ocean.

I think that uCON64 (http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/index.php) has the ability to hard-patch roms through the command line. It also has a load of DX2-specific instructions too. Windows XP requires the MinGW version. See how you get on with that.

"Well there's your problem!" Most patchers (at least those that are at least 6 years old) all use RLE compression in the patches. This is something that Snestool does not do. If you are patching with Snestool, more than likely it's broke at that point.
I haven't heard of anything else broken with Snestool, so it should be good beyond the patching.
Now that that's out of the way, I suppose you use NESticle to test stuff too? <img src=http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I was wondering about ucon64, but I didn't know that a more XP friendly version had been made (I only used the DOS command line version before). I'll give it a thorough checking out. Thank you for your reply! Us DX2 owners have to stick together now that the cherryroms forums are extinct beyond hope.

Yup, that's what I did. All right, I'll try some other methods, then.

That's good. Snestool still seems to be the fastest at cracking slowROM and region protections on large quantities of ROMs.

Really, I wish I had used anything to test this stuff before I wasted CDs burning it. Oh well.
Thanks!
