Is it possible to convert a spc file to a NES sound file (nsf)?
I'm asking this because there is a video on youtube that plays the boss theme from Final Fantasy 7 in a NES sound file (link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=tHL8ym2sNlM), and I was wondering that seeing as how Final Fantasy 4 is soundwise weaker to 7, then it should be possible to convert.

If so, how?

Theoretically, yeah, you could. But you'd lose quite a bit of instruments. You'd also have to do it manually, there's no app to convert SPC to NSF. I'm not the expert on doing this, so check out http://2a03.org2A03.org</a> instead.

Basically, no. The methods the NES and SNES use to generate sound/music are so radically different it's not even funny.

Yup, sounds like NES music; $500 says it was made with http://nesdev.parodius.com/nt2/Nerdtracker</a>, so there was no "conversion" going on.

p.s. I have hacked the music of many NES games, even to the point of rescoring two games' entire soundtracks, so I somewhat know what I'm talking about. Someone like Disch could spell out every little detail of why SPC to NSF conversion is a rediculous concept.

The thing people don't realize is that .nsf and .spc are not music file formats. I mean -- they are in the sense that you play them as music files... but they aren't files like .mid, .it, or .mod which simply spell out a song to play. .nsf and .spc are actually fully self-contained executables... and playing them isn't really "playing" them as much as it's emulating them.

Asking to convert one to the other is pretty much the same thing as asking to convert a SNES rom to a NES ROM (ie: not going to happen) -- because that's essentially what the files are. NSFs are just stripped down NES ROMs, and SPCs are partial SNES savestates.

As Sliver pointed out -- the previously mentioned FF7 song was probably a reproduction. NSFs have a VERY large homebrew community -- and people are constantly homebrewing NSF covers to classic tunes, and even making originals. This isn't really conversion though, it's a cover. They actually went and recomposed the song from scratch... they didn't just run the PSF through a conversion utility.

http://www.2a03.org/Try looking for it here.</a>

It's possible the actual NSF they used is up on the site here...I KNOW that I've heard stuff like the Final Fantasy VII Battle Theme in NES form before.

Oops, Richter already linked you there.
