Recently, http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.0a1/releasenotes/Gran Paradiso 3.0a1</a> has been released. Now usually, I wouldn't touch this with a 100 foot pole and full biohazard containment measures (I stopped using betas a few years back to maintain my sanity, and this is an alpha) but Firefox 2.0 has been driving me up the wall, so I decided to install it in a separate directory and give it a try, to see if it passes Acid2 yet if nothing else (http://home.graffiti.net/lillymon/images/granparadiso_acid2.pngit doesn't</a>).

However everything else seemed to work as good, or even better than Firefox 2.0 did! Using Nightly Tester Tools, all of my extensions seem to work regardless of whether Gran Paradiso thinks they will or not.

The main example I can think of improvements in my case is the bottom scroll-up button. As I use KDE, this is placed on all applications. In Firefox 2.0 and below, this was just decoration and was http://home.graffiti.net/lillymon/images/firefox_scrollbar.pngcovered up</a> whenever the scroll bar moved down far enough. With Gran Paradiso, thing have changed. It works fully and http://home.graffiti.net/lillymon/images/granparadiso_scrollbar.pngdoesn't get covered up</a>. This is all good because the previous behaviour looked really ugly.

So, the purpose of this is to recommend giving Gran Paradiso a try. My experiences with it so far have been highly positive and it seems to work with no real bugs. Other people may have different experiences, but it's been good for me.

The patch that fixes Acid 2 was pushed into the source right after the freeze for this Alpha. It will be in the next build (and all the nightlies) unless someone breaks it.

I passed the acid2 test with this version:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20061210 Minefield/3.0a1

Oddly enough, it's still called "Minefield", prolly because I got it from the trunk versions.

PS: Lilymon, your um..."camel" (I know it's a character from somewhere I can't remember) is stuck on the right side of the screen now...

It's a kelet, and it's working here with Gecko/20061204. Maybe another bug broke marquee tag support? Though it is a bit ironic that using a non-standard tag here in my signature produces actual problems while I worked for hours on my site to make all pages valid XHTML 1.1 despite the site looking fine before I started...
