View Full Version : Endless "fun" with needles

I have neither sewing machine nor competence thereof. This means I gotta stitch by hand. Which, in turn, means this is the time that I have to work on stupid, stupid Halloween bullshit. People (me included) take this way too seriously around here.

This.... I have the ever-idiotic task of stitching the stupid Halloween get-up months in advance, since now is the only time I'll actually have the time to do so. I've decided on going as a Drow wizard. The make-up is no worry; I pulled this off years ago. The staff is almost done; just needs a final coat of paint. Clothing...this is where it sucks the big one. I get to stitch together a full cloak (full capelet, hood, and lining for the hood and main cloak included in that) and a robe. The robe isn't gonna be fun, but it isn't gonna be half the bitch this cloak has been. I don't have the dough to buy this stuff pre-made, so...puh.

I bought some kind of strong material (not the über-strong stuff they called "duck cloth") for the main part of the cloak (in a type of black of course), and some shiny & pretty looking stuff for the lining (a purple-ish blue). I've been using stronger stitches to make sure this stuff doesn't come apart easy. This chews up thread more quickly, and takes oh-so-much longer. It sucks.

I hate 60-inch seams. I've gotten two done, and they felt like they'd never get done. Once I get done with the one I'm on, there'll be five left. Then there's the going around the whole damn thing.

Haven't even thought much about the robe. I've been busy with the cloak.

False advertising! /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Anyway... I think it's cool that you get all into Halloween. That's one of the few remaining hollidays that's actually cool and fun. In fact I think it's my favorite.

Be sure to post a pic of your costume when it's finished /wwwthreads/images/icons/wink.gif. I'd give you some sewing advise if I had some... but I can barely thread a needle... so you're probably better off than I am.

I guess I'm the only one at ZD that can operate a sewing machine.

The day that sewing machines come with a clutch and transmission is the day I'll truly want to learn how to use one.

Well...how far are you from south-eastern Ohio? If the distance isn't too much of a bother, I can direct you to the el-cheapo motel in Athens.

I will...months from now, when the time comes to venture off to Court Street. I've got the facial paint and the ears (leftovers from a few years back), but not what holds the ears in place, or what makes my hair white. Those won't be availible until the time approaches.

I get the feeling that if I tried that, I'd end up with blood oozing from threaded holes in my fingers, since I get distracted easily.

My parents split when I was 10, and my brother & I went with our dad. After mom left I had no maternal figure and no sewing machine. I learned to stitch by myself, by hand (don't ask how many times I stuck myself in the beginning). Never tried anything quite this involved though.

I don't think I'm gonna have to worry too much about the robe; I met up with an old friend and her mom. They said they'd do that for me if I get the stuff. Now I just need to pick a colour, and I'm at a bit of a loss. I'm thinking a darker shade of one the "cool colours," or maybe a (very) deep red. Can't make up my mind though. Input please?
