Just got the Limited Edition OT on DVD. Popped A New Hope into my player. The video is NOT MOTHERFUCKING ANAMORPHIC.
I've had it with George Lucas and his fucking nonsense. Essentially, this is what happened. He finally relented by giving fans the OT on DVD, but then sticks it to them by not making it anamorphic? That's pretty fucking low.
I am getting my money back from these DVDs, and I beg ALL OF YOU.
DO NOT BUY THE LIMITED EDITION STAR WARS DVDS.

I'm suprised that apparently you people still haven't realized that Star Wars is nothing but a cash cow Lucas will milk every year for the rest of his life (and possibly even after his death).
Every year there's a new Star Wars special, new Star Wars toy, new Star Wars release, new Star Wars cartoon... etc. This year you have Special edition DVDs. 3 or 4 years from now we'll have new "remastered" DVDs. Don't forget the High-Def DVDs. Then the "behind the scenes" DVDs with additional extras. Then the "6-in-1" collector pack with possibly a bonus "collectable" figurine attached to the box.
He's been pulling this shit for decades. Seriously -- wake the fuck up and stop buying star wars shit altogether.

Can you explain what anamorphic widescreen's different than the normal widescreen? Isn't the anamorphic a stretched image which sucks anyway?

Anamorphic widescreen is designed to work natively on widescreen televisions. In that format, you get 33% greater resolution, and the image is NOT stretched to fill the space.
If you watch a DVD on your computer, you also get the benefit of this increased resolution. Basically, anamorphic widescreen is the best possible picture you can get out of DVD. The reason I'm pissed with George Lucas is because he gave enhanced 16x9 treatment to his modified version of the film, but not the original. It's him basically saying "if you want the definitive picture and sound experience. you can only get it through my modified version of the trilogy."
It's the typical bag over the head, punch in the face Lucas has been doing to his original fans for years.

The argument against this is that if they were in anamorphic widescreen, they'd be modified...and these are the 'unmodified' editions.

Exactly. These aren't supposed to be enhanced. If you want the enhanced version go get those instead. Movie production is not a cafeteria-style affair. You can't just pick and choose whatever goodies you want to make your own "Coolie's Totally Awesome Star Wars Trilogy". There's alot of people who will be very happy with these because they are true to the originals, just like they used to watch on their Betamax tapes at 2 in the morning.

You know I saw startrek the original tv show when I was 6 and starwars when I was 12 and I'm 43 and I think there is much better stuff out there. So what if he's the first one to do blue screen and shit. It's just a stupid movie that's 30 years old and people still worship it like it's the greatest movie ever made. Hell Babylon 5 series was a 100 times better than all the starwars put together, and I know there will be a better series or movie better than that.

THAT IS FUCKING BULLSHIT.
You can have an anamorphic transfer on OLD WIDESCREEN MOVIES. The movie itself has nothing to do with this - if it's in a rectangular format (like 16x9), then it CAN BE ANAMORPHIC. Why do movies like Dawn of the Dead have Anamorphic versions too? Because they were shot in FUCKING WIDESCREEN.
Lucas is a fucking ratcocksucking motherfucker. He did this ON PURPOSE. Fuck him. He's not getting my money.

I think you're mistaking enhanced widescreen with "dicked around".
Enhanced Widescreen means that the film was transferred into a format that'll fit in a widescreen display natively, but which gets slightly scaled down for display on a standard television. It does not mean it'll have any bonus features, or special effects, or anything.
The way these DVDs are... they're WASTING disc space just so they can encode the fucking black bars on top and bottom of the picture. Instead of encoding a better and larger picture, they encoded a smaller version with the bars. There's hundreds of movies from the same era that have Anamorphic Widescreen versions. So why the fuck didn't they do it to these movies?

Kitsune's explanation was excellent, but here's a more comprehensive look at what anamorphic DVDs are all about:

Word up. And seriuosly, Star Wars wasn't even that great. I never really understood why it developed such a crazy following.

Uh, I know what anamorphic widescreen is. I guess it's just that I don't have any problem with the remastered versions of the films aside from the "Greedo shoots first" bullshit. The rest of the edits were just continuity fixes anyway.

So you're saying that these films don't deserve an anamorphic transfer because they're the original, older versions?

hahaha bitch all you want. I'm sure you'll run to the store at midnight to buy the trilogies and individual discs all over again when they come out on blu-ray or hd-dvd or both (cause lucas ain't an asshole, but he is a genius, and for thaty he's rich.)
if you're not such a hardcore fan than I apologize, cause my old buddie buys all the video releases and shit like that. I have them all copied to dvd+r (rented of course!) take that lucas!

I was just thinking that...if they aren't anamorphic (which is annoying) maybe they just took the LaserDisc version of the film and slapped it on DVD. They should've done it proper.

Yeah, that's the only thing I find kind of strange...the editing is very odd to me on that for some reason. It just looks weird. :P I wouldn't let it ruin the movie for me though...it's not like it doesn't last all of a second.
I don't understand so much why people freak out about this even if it is a bit obnoxious. StarWars is still like 95% the same movie I knew and loved growing up.
