So I have a 40 gig HD free. I was thinking about using Windows 2000 on it. My question is, since both are NT based, is it true to say that is an emulator or game doesn't work with XP, it won't work with 2000 ? Are most emulators run fine well with 2k ? To say the truth, in the past I used Dosshell, Win. 95, 98, XP. Never really explored 2000. My cousin likes 2000 over XP. He say that 2000 have all the good features of XP without being a memory hog.

I find that whatever works on XP just about always works as well on 2000. In fact, I don't think I've ever come across an XP-compatible program that didn't run on my 2000 Pro install.

I also prefer Windows 2000 over XP. I keep an install of XP on a separate partition, and I can't say I use it much. A whole lot of things seem to have been dumbed down in XP, and certain other things are automated (read: you have no control over). The only things you might miss are Windows themes, but you could always get the same effect with Windowblinds or some other such program.

You should also take into consideration that MS have been looking to drop the axe on support for all pre-XP systems. There's no telling how much longer they'll offer security updates for their older OS's.

Until 2008, I believe. Microsoft just stopped releasing new non-critical updates to the OS a few months ago. It's on its way out. Unless you need it for a server or something, I wouldn't recommend using it. If you want Windows XP without the fluff, try Server 2003 instead. It's bsed on a newer kernel and has alot of the perviously automated stuff availble at your fingertips for tinkering.

Pre-Service Pack 4, Windows 2000 suffered from a lot of the incompatibilities inherent in NT4. However, a lot of the XP stuff was backported into the OS as of SP4, so for the most part, 99% of anything that will run under XP will run under 2000.

There are, however, some things that XP can run that 2000 simply can't, mainly old DOS games. This is primarily due to changes in the XP kernel that virtualize a lot of privilaged instructions in the x86 architecture, among them CLI, POPF, etc. You can notice this very well in any of the BUILD engine games (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, etc); You can get sound to function under XP (Though the default SB emulation in XP sucks ass; Use VDMSound or SoundFX2000), but not in 2000.

One thing that was also backported from XP is the Compatibility Mode options, but enabling them under 2000 is less that straight forward.

To do this, open the command prompt, and type the following:

regsvr32 c:\winnt\apppatch\slayerui.dll
(Note C:\WINNT will be whatever folder you installed Win2K into)

Now if you make a shortcut to a program, the "Compatibility" tab will appear.

Now, as an overview, I much prefer 2000 over XP; I've ran it for the past three years, and have been nothing but pleased with it. It has 98% of XP's functionality, but requires a significantly smaller amount of CPU and RAM resources to run. In my opinion, it's the best OS MS has produced, and with what I've seen of Vista, will probably stand that way for a long time to come.
