I've been working on a project with one of my friends to create a short documentary about cars and the local racing scene in Southern California. There's a few import racing films out there such as Mischief and Turbo Video Magazine, but they are mainly focused on showing off glitzy rides and hot Asian bikini models. Also, most of these videos are almost entirely based on drag racing.
Our goal is to break free of the "riceboy" image and show a gritty, no-frills overview of the sport with footage of import and domestic machines along with the men and women who build them doing what they love to do- going fast and having fun. What I want to avoid is portraying the scene the way The Fast and the Furious did- neon lights and showy Hondas doing more parading than actual driving.
I'd like to cover a wide range of motorsport footage- highway racing, non-competition runs through country roads, car audio installations, the L.A. Auto Show, some drag racing, and maybe even some party footage to add to the film's atmosphere. If I can grab some bike race clips, I'll include that as well. Interviews with the drivers will be supplemental to their race clips. All this will be set against a diverse soundtrack to include everything from metal to progressive house to chilled downtempo.
Right now I have just a few clips of my car and my friend Eric's WRX in some legal race events and an in-car of me on the freeway. I've been talking to a few other people about featuring their cars and some of my customers at work have expressed interest in showing their sound systems/ motors for a technical segment.
Most likely this will remain an underground video since I really don't know how to go about securing rights to music, either that or I will have someone produce an original soundtrack. We mostly just want to have fun with this since this is what we love to do, and show a side of the sport many people have never seen. It would be great if we could create a documentary that would appeal to folks who never had any interest in cars or racing before. Once it's complete, my friend will upload it to his site for public consumption. I might sell some VHS copies to friends and people at the track as well. Perhaps I'll post a link to some clips here if anyone is interested.
