If I may rant aimlessly...

I remember my sociology professor discussing IQ tests. Apparently, it's well documented that intelligence tests are systematically biased towards the members of the culture in which they were conceived. Our culture (along with the concept of intelligence) has always been male-dominated, so it should be no surprise that men score better than women, on average, especially as they age.

But that means there must be systematic differences between the sexes, otherwise there could be no bias. Are those differences cultural or biological...or both? I dunno, but the study says that the differences only seem to become apparent after the age of 14. That strongly suggests a cultural trend. I was under the impression that, for this reason, IQ tests were considered unreliable in adults.

I think it's important to address these questions honestly, though. We shouldn't avoid studying the differences between men and women just because we're afraid of what we might find. Not so long ago, there was some uproar because the Harvard president suggested that it might be possible that there were biological differences between men and women causing the discrepant IQ scores. Dear god, call the thought police, a man is considering scientific possibilities!

Oh, and in response to juggaleaux ---> <img src=smilies/laff.gif>

This reminds me of what I said to my sister about the SATs being racially biased.
I said {sarcasm}"You're right. All the questions should be about watermelon and cars."{/sarcasm}

P.S. This was a joke, so I would like to make it known that cbxweb doesn't need to kill me.

i ment it more in the sense of the naming scheme "AMD sempiron 2800+" really being a 1.8ghz cpu.

(hugs his AMD laptop) the thing seriously performs better than any other in its price class.

You can find one such woman here (http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=114285). I would stick around and say more, but I know someone here and don't want to intrude. I'm only saying this much because this issue is important to me.

If anyone thinks that their government's gender-based discrimination is not justified in this case and the law should be changed, I hope you'll tell your Congresspeople so. They are just an email away. /wwwthreads/images/icons/smile.gif Contact info for House (http://www.house.gov/writerep/) and Senate (http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/general/one_item_and_teasers/contacting.htm).
