I suppose they don't understand that countries like Denmark and Norway have (mostly) free presses. They literally can't comprehend how this is the actions of one newspaper, and that the government has nothing to do with it. Probably think the Jews had something to do with it, too. What total fucking idiots. And how about those Palestinians electing Hamas eh? That's a brilliant move on their part, isn't it?

I think William S. Burroughs said something like "They're living 1000 years in the past, and think they can get out with a television set." when asked about Muslims.

You know, we kind of DO seem like we're moving toward a clash of civilizations, whether we like it or not. This is gonna be bloody folks, especially in places where the civilizations are mixed.

I agree, though sending death threats after being depicted as terrorists sends it's own message. These people who were sending death threats are proving to the world that they ARE fanatics. Damn.

While I'd agree that the rioters are acting like complete idiots (it's beyond me how they think attacking embassies is a good way to demonstrate that the cartoons' characterization of Islam is false), I'd limit the statement to the rioters. There are a lot of Muslims in the world-- the vast majority of them aren't participating in this violence.

Armed Palestinians have stormed an EU office in Gaza in protest against the caricature drawings portraying Islam's Muhammed as a terrorist in the Danish Jyllands-Posten.
My first thought was, oh wow...many people has started seeing them as potential threats - which is a huge problem for them - and so there's some extremists (there always are) who seem to think terrorizing will convince the world of the contrary.

. . .

First of all...talk about worrying about dandruff when your hair is on fire. Second, I vote we henceforth address these paragons of intellect, the "Paradox Brigade".

Now, granted I understand their frustration; it is taboo and forbidden to depict the prophet Muhammed in the majority of of the muslim world, and then when the prophet is assigned the characteristics of a terrorist makes the provocation absolute.

However, threatening to kill over something so trivial as a caricature drawing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyllands-Posten_Muhammad_cartoons)...actually, trivial feels much too light a word when you compare this to human lives. It really goes without saying that there is no excuse for such stupidity.

On the other spectrum, as much as I value my rights, printing those pictures had very little value, you can not judge speech independently of the speech's value. I have seen comparisons to Salman Rushdies novel, "The Satanic Verses", which quite frankly is ludicrous. This juxtaposition makes no sense since the motivation (among other things) are vastly contrasting; Rushdies book is the result of a personal journey and a project with a purpose far beyond the provocation itself, the caricatures are just provocation.

Defending this kind of freedom of speech which stops only at the right to speak your mind about any and everything is another kind of fundamentalism and a flaw I hope many people will shrug off. It is comparable identical to the religious zealotry that threatens the foundation of our liberal and democratic structure that freedom of speech is part of.

You make a good point - I just worry about who should get to be the arbiter of what speech has value and what doesn't. Having said that, there is a strong case for having some absolutes, as much on grounds of basic taste and decency as anything else.

My first reaction was that I wasn't particularly bothered about the cartoons. But it does occur to me that I'd have winced a little if the cartoons were anti-semitic (though I should point out that I'm a staunch atheist). Perhaps, then, we're just desensitised to a particular view of Islam. But then, for five people - and counting - to die over this is plainly absurd, especially coming from countries and peoples who very regularly print and read blantantly anti-semitic cartoons.

So while there needs to be some basic respect for aspects of theology and ideology that are sacred, absolutely nobody should be immune from critisism. Whilst I won't speak ill of Muhammed, David or any other Godhead, I'll reserve absolutely the right to criticise someone who earns it through their own efforts.

EDIT: I found this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4685886.stm) article on the topic quite interesting. Beware the Salman Rushdie parallel, though, UncleOral.

The case has been resolved, the extremists have replaced their pitchforks with glow sticks in a gigantic muslim rave party (http://www.glumbert.com/media/rave.html)!

Phew, sure glad that's over with!

Not to disrespect the Muslim religion, but you don't see Christians forming violent mobs nationwide at the publishing of a cartoon depicting Jesus in a satirical fashion.

Yeah but we had the crusades among other things. ANY religion that is given too much power commits atrocities of one kind or another. Even Buddhists had their militant sect back in feudal times.

And radical christians bomb abortion clinics instead.

Why can't everyone just sit back and smoke a huge fucking blunt? It would cure all of the worlds problems. But no its illegal or banned so everyone is going to be angry over stupid pictures or some other dumb shit. And bomb cars and people walking down the street! What do I say? Fuck the world! Everyone can go to hell and back and back to hell again.<img src=smilies/flipa.gif>

Because blunts taste like shit and turn a non-addictive drug (marijuana) into a highly addictive one (via nicotine). And goddamnit I can't stand those wiggers who smoke blunts to try to be cool. Yeah sure, you get more weed in a blunt, but why don't you just roll more than one joint or get a huge piece or something? You'll save money not buying cigars to slice open or blunt wraps.

Seriously I feel bad for all the people choking down those heinous things. Bong-rips, bowls, and joints are where it's at.

Man, I need to find employment so I can smoke again. :(

And yes, I'm hi-jacking my own thread to talk about weed.

Yeah, but if it was allowed there would be no need to conserve because you have a fuckload of it in your backyard! Blunts would be your joints of the future. What would thugs smoke then?...
But yeah I like bongs the most! They are also neet to smoke from.<img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>
