will you be able to put other x86 OSes on that thing?

I would laugh if someone managed to get XP running on it. <img src=smilies/laff.gif>

It uses EFI, not a BIOS, so it's unknown at this point exactly what has to be done to get other OSes working.

isn't EFI being used on some newer intel 64 bit servers? (Itanium)

what OSes do/can they run?

I seem to remember being told that Intel chips were less expensive and easier to produce than IBMs. Then why is the "MacBook Pro" more expensive than the Powerbook?

Damn, I shouldn't have clicked on that, considering there are no headphones in the student lounge. I didn't even realize these comps had speakers until that thing came on, it seems they're hidden behind the desk so students don't mess with em. Thank God no one was in here with me when the guy on that mentioned butt sex.

The MacBook Pro is one hot fucking item, and the new iMac is great, too. Someone def. needs to figure out how to make this puppy dual boot with Windows, tho'. Otherwise it's of no use to me.

Somebody will. If they can do "Virtual Windows", which exists for OS9, they'll figure out a dual boot dealie.

Perhaps they will, but emulating a system and running an OS natively are different issues...

Agreed.
But the main point is, once you start using OS X, why in god's name would you want something as buggy as Windows??

Perfectly valid arguements, tho'. I'd switch full-time to OS X if it was stocked with all the emulators I use. I simply can't live without Kega and ZSNES. I'm hoping the processor switch will encourage emulator authors to port their projects.

So far, however, I've found a great many OS X programs that replace many of my Windows counterparts. For example:

Web: Firefox
E-mail: Thunderbird
IM: Adium
IRC: X-Chat Aqua
Media: VLC
Bittorrent: Azureus

Still no fantastic replacements for Word Processing (OO.org is butt-ugly under x11), and MP3 playing (tho' iTunes is okay, I guess).

I don't worry about games, because I don't play PC games anymore.

I've fallen in love with Pages from iWork.

I thought pages was quark-lite. Is it also an actual word processor? Apple.com doesn't seem to say one way or the other.

If it is a word processor, how does it save files? I hope OpenDocument, but I doubt it.

It's more of a page composer than a "word processor." On Windows, the closest thing I'd equate it to would be Adobe's PDF creator. It has all the basic word processing features you could ask for. It's kind of like Quark I guess, but no where near as powerful. If all you're doing is black text on a white page, it's probably overkill. But for embedding images or including any sort of graphics in your writing, it's great.

I don't have it here at work, but I know it saves to Word .docs and AppleWorks, and I'm sure there's more.

That's okay. I'm still planning on running OS X on a garden variety PC once it's cracked.

And don't listen to the naysayers.

It WILL be cracked, and cracked badly.

it's not a matter of whether it will be cracked, it's a matter of when Microsoft will add EFI support to windows (if you RTFA)

EFI based PCs run driver code completely different than your standard BIOS PC. The entire kernel for the OS would need to be rewritten.
