I feel like utter shit. For the last few days, I've been stressing and straining over my classes and my research, having a mental breakdown. Now, I have a cold. I think I literally made myself sick with the stress.

On the surface, you might think that working (because grad students are really just poorly paid employees) at an ivy league school would be great. You know, guaranteed future, lots of prestige, a feeling of self-importance, etc. Whatever, it's stressful as hell. Even when you're at your best, you feel inadequate because it seems like everybody around you is better. The slightest failure can trigger a bad mood, and for someone with a history of depression that's not a good thing. I felt much better at Penn State, nobody bats an eye when a PSU student screws up and nobody resents you for going there.

Anyway, thank god for Fairy and thank god for you guys. This board is really a blast.

I do that too, from stress and worry. It reminds me of a quote from the movie Road Trip w/ Tom Green. That one smart guy is all: "I had been on an adult dosage of xanex since the 5th grade. The only thing that ever balanced me out was weed." But i would replace the weed with beer.

So yeah, that's my medicine for whenever I'm starting to feel one of those colds coming on. http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/smilies/magbiggrin.gif Anyway, thank god for Fairy and thank god for you guys.

Yeah, this board is part of my daily regimen for stress relief etc... combined with the healing powers of alcohol, it puts me back on top of my game.

Bah, can't stand the taste of the stuff. Otherwise, I would. I try to use tea as a substitute, but it probably has the opposite effect from what I'm looking for. I would use gaming as a stress-reliever, but I've been working on this piece of shit Sparc for so long that I might as well bring a deck of cards to work.

Smashing things always worked for me as a stress reliever. That's gotta be at least part of the reason why we have punching bags. If punching isn't enough, get a 4' wooden dowl, tape off 6-8" from the end, and have at it.

Where you at?

I actually do that from time to time, but it usually makes me feel worse....guilty, I guess. Not because I've destroyed anything of value, just because it makes me feel out of control. I do like those squeeze ball things, though, they feel like breasts. /wwwthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Princeton. The few, the proud, the preppy. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Figure of speech. Notice I didn't capitalize.

...right. I'll take your word for it.

Perhaps you need a fencing and/or sparring partner, or something.

B vitamins are the ones that control mood and help you deal with stress and Brocoli is loaded with it, and if you steam it instead of boiling or microwaving you'll recieve a really high amount of antioxidants which will cleanse your body and make it easier for your immune system to deal with your cold and make you feel better in the process, and BTW don't forget to put some melted cheese all over that brocoli.

Dreary weather, bad traffic, antisocial grad students, and everybody's the same! Not usually much fun, no.

Usually several hundred, depending on how long it takes for a university employee to overhear them complaining.

Two - one to call the electrician, the other to mix the martinis

Have I ever been there. What works for me is to occasionally put everything aside, remove any clutter from my space, and play my acoustic for a while. Maybe go for a drive with some chilled music.

At work I just go into the soundproof room and scream.

Of course, during college when I got stressed, I just fucked off with my housemates and downed percoset + valium with 40oz. Mickeys. I don't recommend it.

Anyway, I hope you feel better soon!

That's what those who drink a lot say to me, but I've never had a drink where I couldn't taste the alcohol. It just tastes bitter to me.

> I dunno why the tea wouldn't relax you.

Well, it does, to some extent, but it's also a stimulant. The overall effect is to make me unstressed, but jittery.

No, but I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, I took yoga in college and I really enjoyed it. I still do it sometimes, but I've been getting lazy about it.

I hear that, bro. I have two babies right now, my girlfriend and my acoustic.

Songwriting has always been one of my best stress relievers -- I've been doing it for like 5 years now. If I had more free time, I'd make another CD, but alas.... /wwwthreads/images/icons/frown.gif

Sweet deal. I don't think we have any soundproof rooms, though.

Don't worry, I've never been into drugs or alcohol anyway.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.
