View Full Version : Question regarding proper resolution/settings

First time poster, long time emulation user. Anyway, my question is regarding the best settings for emulators in full screen mode. In windowed, my emulators (specifically zsnes & Jnes) run with very crisp resolution/viewing, but when I switch that to full screen, it doesn't look nearly as clear. With zsnes, I've been able to mess around with it a bit and have it look a little better, but not to an exact "full screen" view, still having black bars around the sides. I haven't made many strides at all with Jnes.
So I'm just wondering what it is I'm missing to be able to enjoy things in full screen, with the resolution being as crisp as possible. If the solution is with these emulators, that's great, but if there's another emulator that does things better, I'm open to whatever suggestions can be given. Thanks for the help!

well, monitor aspect ratios are different than (s)nes aspect ratios, so you're left with two options (well, in ZSNES at least)
correct aspect ratio: This will get you the black bars on each side, but there will be almost zero distortion. I prefer this mode.
"stretched": This will fill the gaps, but you will suffer from stretched pixels. Everything will look wider. It looks stupid imo.
I don't know how Jnes does fullscreen, but just to let you know there are much better NES emulators out there (FCEU, Nintendulator). <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

I am an emulation novice but I have found that by sticking with emulators that have some image filtering options makes things look a whole lot better in general, especially when stretching to full-screen size. I like to use the Super Eagle or the Super 2xsaI mode to smooth out all that pixelation.
For NES ezpecially, I like to use the latest version of Nestopia becuase it supports these image filters and other things I like to mess with (like Game Genie).
Hope this helps.

Bleh, I've always prefered pixelation to these filters (Which are sometimes refered to as "TV Mode," must be the most blurry TV ever). Same thing with scanlines, emulator scanlines look nothing like a TV, they just look like black lines on the screen.

In my opinion, the best filter (if your PC can handle it) is hq2x. It doesn't blur anything, and yet it smooths out jaggies.

I just use Zsnes's Interpolation.
