View Full Version : I officially retire
I officially retire from gaming. I don't think I can be considered a "gamer" any longer.
I haven't heard of nine in 10 games I hear people mention.
I haven't read game news websites or magazines in 11 months.
I haven't purchased a console video game since Sakura Taisen 3.
I haven't purchased a PC game since Heroine Anthem II.
I haven't found any justification for the Nintendo Revolution controller.
I want to shit myself when I see controllers that do not use the left hand for direction and right for buttons exclusively.
I never bought a PlayStation2, X-box, WonderSwan Crystal, GameBoy Advance, or Gamecube.
I don't want to buy a PlayStation 3, Nintendo Revolution, Nintendo DS, or X-box 360.
I can't name even one launch title for any system that has come out since 2002, or will be coming out in the future.
I never play games more than two hours per week anymore--with the exception of computer-based chess or weiqi.
No one remembers any of the games I do still play.
I forgot the combination to my bicycle lock, which I originally set a "6502" so I would "never forget it."
I think I'm done ...

Honestly I think in about 1-2 years I'll be jumping on your bandwagon.. I've already developed a bitter case of what I'm calling, "Granpa Syndrom", where I complain about all the games that come out now-a-days.. I can't seem to finish any of my beloved classics either... time will tell

Not a chance.
Given new systems cost 80% of my monthly income (3,500 yuan), I won't be buying one any time soon.
... Not that I would buy one even if I made more money.

Yeah, "Grandpa Syndrom"[sic] works as an explanation for this.
I'm pretty much out of classic and have been for a long time. I tried to branch off into NEC PC-88 games, but honestly, that machine is just too ghetto—even for me. If it can't match the power of AT LEAST the Atari 2600 in graphics and sound, I can't handle it.

I've slowed down considerably myself. Ys6, Dragon Quest VIII, and Katamari are all I've bought over the last year.
And there really isn't anything on the horizon that I care for.

I feel you, man. I play next to NOTHING anymore. You could name all the popular games, and I'd be like "What kind of game is THAT?"
I have, however, not given up games. I've just decided to be ultra selective. I really only play GameCube, and only buy games I can start in a hurry, and end just as fast (like a Super Monkey Ball, Donkey Konga, etc.).

How is Dragon Quest VIII? Granted I don't have a PS2, and I only make 3,500 yuan a month so I'll never have a PS2, I'm curious to hear the opinion of a non-rabid Square-Enix fan or corporate whore.
I remember seeing pictures of it last year, but it looked nothing at all like a Dragon Quest game, so I just ignored it. Basically the same policy I had for all the newfangled Ys games.

It doesn't look like the Dragon Quest games of yore, but it sure plays like them.
There's nothing quite like having the first boss completely wipe the floor with your ass.
The voice acting is pretty funny, too.
Yeah yeah, I know, voice acting in a Dragon Quest game... that probably already ruined it for you. :P

I have you beat. The last game I bought was Zelda Windwaker, because the only new games I buy, tend to be Zeldas. I bought a Gamecube and I own three games. Windwaker, Double-Dash and Mario Sunshine (haven't played the last of the three yet). I do own a Playstation that my brother buys games for, but I use the system primarily as a DVD player. Every now and I then, I will play and beat a classic video game from the NES or SNES era either for nostalgia or it will be something I've never played before.
I think this happened to me a long time ago ;)

It was ruined when the characters turned out not to be 16x16, or at least 16x24, sprites.

So far, it's very enjoyable.
It's in 3D, but the game mechanics are strangely almost completely identical the prior DQ games.
Battle mechanics ARE entirely identical.
Levelling up is mostly identical, they just added a skill tree system into it. Every few levels you get points to spend on weapon skills, so you have to choose whether to be REALLY powerful with one type of weapon and crappy with the rest (great at swords but terrible with spears), or to kind-of even it out.
There is voice acting, and as Audigy said, it's not terrible. It takes a lot for me to admit that. I've never really liked any videogame's voice acting before, but this one isn't too bad.
So far it's really well put-together and fun.
Like the olden days.

> How is Dragon Quest VIII?
I've only played the demo, but here's my little nitpicky thing:
Camera is too low to the ground, your character ends up obscuring your view too much (Not nearly as bad as other games, but still, its 2005, can't we get a chase-cam right yet?).
You can't move in first-person mode, it would've remedied the above if you could.
Menu has been overhauled, but it's still a pain in the ass (In brand new ways!). At least you don't have to chose "Talk" anymore (Probably haven't for a while, but I have played a DW game since 4)
Battles will make you all nostalgic.
Voices aren't too bad but I shut them off (I hate voice acting, I read fast, I'm done the text box and have to wait for the voice to finish)
I think it's a good game, but I probably won't buy it. Given your logic I'm not a gamer anymore either, if I buy more than 5 games a year its a miracle, and now that I'm working I'm really stingy with my money.

You're probably an oldschool gamer like a few of us here.
> I haven't heard of nine in 10 games I hear people mention.
I have only because a couple of friends of mine are into those games--don't really have a desire to play most newer games.
> I haven't read game news websites or magazines in 11 months.
I have Game Informer only for the GameStop discount card. = D
> I haven't purchased a console video game since Sakura Taisen 3.
If you are talking about only "new" games and not used ones I've only bought Forza for the XBOX new and only because it was $29.99 and only $3.00 more than the used one. Otherwise the last new game I bought was Gran Turismo 4 and before that it was Final Fantasy VIII.
> I haven't purchased a PC game since Heroine Anthem II.
I haven't bought a "new" PC game since Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and before that it was Unreal Tournament the original.
> I haven't found any justification for the Nintendo Revolution controller.
Me either, I find it repulsive.
> I want to shit myself when I see controllers that do not use the left hand for direction and right for buttons exclusively.
I half agree, the PS2's right analog stick for camera movement and rotational movement is ok.
> I never bought a PlayStation2, X-box, WonderSwan Crystal, GameBoy Advance, or Gamecube.
I've bought only a PS2 "new", I have purchased an XBOX and GameCube used. Before that it was the PSX.
> I don't want to buy a PlayStation 3, Nintendo Revolution, Nintendo DS, or X-box 360.
Me either with the exception of an XBOX 360 and ONLY because of Project Gotham Racing 3.
> I can't name even one launch title for any system that has come out since 2002, or will be coming out in the future.
I can, only because I followed that stuff durning that time period and not only worked for GameStop but also was shopping at least once a week for about 2 years. = )
> I never play games more than two hours per week anymore--with the exception of computer-based chess or weiqi.
I play about 3-6 hours a week and that is usually Friday night-Sunday and 99% of the time with friends. I seldom play games alone.
> No one remembers any of the games I do still play.
If you'd name some US released games I might. = D

I hate how most new games expect you to move and stafe with the left stick and turn and look with the right... and half of them don't let you change it. I wouldn't suck at these games if I could move and turn with the left (The way they did it for years) and stafe and look with the right...

You haven't had to since DQ4. All the SNES ones mapped it to a universal action key (usually Y) that did Talk/Search/Whatever was appropriate for the moment.
Having to select Talk never really struck me as that evil.
Now having to select STAIRS or DOOR on the other hand ... someone at Enix should have had their testicles laminated and turned into a funny necklace for that choice ...

My roommate and I were talking about this very same thing yesterday. We visited our local EB and Gamestop and we were not excited by any of the titles.
If/when I buy games for my xbox, I almost never buy them new and I almost never spend more than $10 per game. The last game I bought had to be Wolfenstein (bad move...don't get that game) and this was probably in June.
I play 'more' PC games than I do console games but that isn't really saying much. I also don't buy any of them - none of them are worth the $50+ pricetag. I did play, beat and enjoy Quake 4 but that is pretty much it. Hated AoE 3, F.E.A.R, and Battlefront II. I do want to get into Civ 4 and The Movies, but we'll see. The only enticing PC game on the horizon is Spore and that game just looks astounding. Last game I bought had to be Half Life 2, whenever that came out.
I find a major problem with my gaming habits is that I just don't have th TIME to invest in games anymore. That's why I love Quake and FPSs...you can really pick up the game, play for an hour, put it down for a few days and not forget where you are in the game. I haven't played a RPG since KOTOR for that very reason, and it is for that reason why I probably won't ever play Civ 4.
I do see myself eventually getting a 360 and maybe even a Revolution, when they announce just how their download service is gonna work. I WILL be using GC controllers and not that damn remote.

*ding ding ding*
We have a WINNAR! That's the biggest problem with anyone over the age of 20--time. You'll find that most of the gamers that have either lost thier way or just aren't interested is that they don't have the copious amounts of freetime like they did when they were younger than 18. I also agree with the FPS part of your post...I'd also throw in Racing games with that catagory of being able to put it down and pick it up again and instantly be back in the thick of things. That's why every RPG since Suikoden 1 I have not finished because I just don't have the time and can't get back into it because I forgot everything.
> I do see myself eventually getting a 360 and maybe even a

Solution is the adaptor I bought for my XBOX--it can let you use PS2 controllers and steering wheels on the XBOX AND the GameCube. I found using it for RE4 on the GC was easier with the PS2 controller versus the GameCube controller. Now imagine being able to use a PS2 controller on the Revolution.
So I say this to Nintendo --> Take your controllers and remotes and stuff them.

Yeah, I was also gonna mention racing games because they are definitely my 'guilty pleasure' game of choice. They aren't that good but damn are they fun every so often!
Also, I don't want this to turn into another debate over the Nintendo Remote, so I'll say this....AFAIK, we have seen a handful of promotional videos of it actually being used and they haven't announced how the remote will ACTUALLY work in a game....it's all concepts at this point, and they can change them without us knowing.
So everyone can go back and forth but the fact is that they haven't specifically stated how the remote will operate in a specific game as of yet. Once again, I haven't kept up with the news so I could be wrong, but it just seems silly to get so fired up when neither side has any real evidence.
Except for a controller that really, really looks like a remote.

I don't either. Everyone says to "look at the video" but thing is, these are paid actors. You can make anything look liek fun to play with when you're paid to do so. They could've made the new controller out of dead Korean kids and someone would've accepted the cash to play games using it and pretend to have fun.

Well honestly though - dead Korean children resemble actual video game controllers more than the Revolution's controller does.
Something to think about.

Hm, it IS possible to be an oldschool gamer but also enjoy some newer games. I consider myself in this catagory. I love the old games, I have no problem playing them. I also have newer games I like.
How many people here are like this? It seems like a lot of people say this thing about only wanting to play the old school games, so I'm just wondering.

I'd say I'm in this category. I generally want simple gameplay, and some newer games still manage to do this. Also, I like some newer RPGs since they have the capacity to make a good story (like Xenosaga, in my opinion). I'm of the opinion that the amount of crappy games being made today is exactly the same as it was back in the 8-bit era. I just suck at all of today's good games, so it's not worth my money or time to try and keep up.

We're only "old school" gamers because the new games don't appeal to us... when there's the rare game that's just like the classics I'm all over it (Sadly they're mostly remakes, but then you have the gems available on the GBA and DS)
