i'm thinking of selling my 30-06 to get a ruger mini-14 .223.

the 30-06 is a nice gun, but it's too much kick to shoot more than a magazine or 2...a mini-14 i could shoot all day non-stop.

but that also means that i'd be giving up the gun i was going to go hunting with this fall...you can't hunt with .223 in PA..or a semi for that matter.

a nice mini-14 that i saw was $450...going to offer $300 and work up.

bah..decisions, decisions...

Generally the recoil generated by the 30-06 itself is manageable. The fact that recoil on this particular arm is uncomfortably firm is probably related to a couple of things. Two of the main reasons of uncomfortable recoil is stock design and weight. I think I recall you mentioning the fact that the stock was a synthetic, which brings the weight down quite a bit. There's a possibility that the stock may not be designed to centralize rearward force either. Fitting a wooden stock (a laminate would do well if you desire more durability than solid wood stocks- they make laminates in dark colours such as grey so if you're looking for low visibility this also works) or a heavier synthetic would work as well. Firing loads with heavier bullets tends to cause less recoil too. If there's a gunsmith or hobbyist in your area you might speak with them about these or any other things you might be able to do. Magnaporting would be another option.

Just do what you figure you need to do. It's your stuff man.

if i don't sell it, i need to:

1) put on a muzzle break
2) put a pad on the butt

or on the flip side i could have an all-purpose mini-14. i think i'm going for the mini-14.

got it. pre-ban ruger mini-14 (blued) with flash suppressor, sling, 5 round mag and 20 round aftermarket (bleh) mag. $375.

now i'm going to get a black synthetic pistol grip folding stock. in the future i may thread the barrel for an actual suppressor. they're only like $400 after cost, shipping and class III fees.

my .22LR has more recoil than this .223...it's small, accurate as hell, and my new varmint rifle.

ok mom..i'm ready to defend your garden when i watch the house this summer
