I noticed noone ever comment about pinball machines...with vpinmame, visual pinball and the awesome future pinball platforms, I think its worth mentioning it. Tables like The Getaway, Tales of Arabian Nights, Black Knight 2K and more are also a staple of my youth.

Nobody mentions it probably because you can't really emulate a pinball machine. You can emulate the hardware, and simulate the table geometry, but it's not the same. You don't get the same experience unless you can hear and feel the chunky 'thunk' of the flippers on Bally/Midway/Williams pinball machines, physically shake the machine, and so on. Me, I'm a big fan of Safecracker, Attack From Mars, Road Show, Indy 500, No Good Gofers, and Revenge From Mars.

way back when I was into epic pinball. That was always fun.

Amen to that. I've been using the pinball game that comes with XP because I'm desperately needing a time-killer besides solitaire, and it's frustrating how there's no real consistent set of physics. How the ball behaves in one round will in no way indicate how it will behave the next, end of story...

You have to try http://www.futurepinball.com It's not perfect but hey, it kicks the built in pinball's tush.
I made a script with autohotkey so you can use a gamepad to play the pinball games. get it from this post.
