View Full Version : Life gets worse

This...good grief. I can't believe this.
I went and talked to the Air Force ROTC recruiter today. One of the things that came up is that people MUST be off prescription medication for at least 1 year before they can sign up. The major told me that all the branches have something to that extent. And he also said that people with a history with asthma are 4F immediately (medically disqualified).
Great. There goes the sure-fire solution. I have 11 weeks to come up with something else and fast. I wish this was an April Fool's joke, but it isn't. I hate my life.

Heh. I post what's actually going on in my life, and I get the picture everyone thought it an April Fool's joke. Or nobody cares. Geez. And then everyone eats up Brad's April Fool's joke like it was real.
So glad I'm loved. <img src=smilies/angryfire.gif>

Hey, it's not that. That was a difficult post for me to respond to personally. As far as Brad's was concerned, that was an obvious cry for help/lack of medication/total idiocy post.
I didn't respond to that one, either. :D

Okay, okay. Sorry about that. I just got steamed about it. I mean, I'm looking at having nothing at all in 11 weeks, since what I thought was gonna save my ass isn't gonna do a damn thing, and people would rather yell at Brad, who isn't lookin at losing the roof over his head in the near future.
Any suggestions on what may help at all would be much appreciated, anybody.

That's pretty rough man. You have/had athsma, or have you just been on medication recently?
I'm assuming here that you might lose the roof over you're head because of a cashflow problem, but as horrible as the idea sounds, just get a shitty minimum wage job until you can get something more desireable sorted out. If you get enough hours, you should be able to support yourself for the time being.

Both. The asthma is nearly gone though.

In college. Since I've never had any money, and my folks never put anything back for when I got to this age, I'm on the edge of broke, and barely get by scraping the bottom of the bucket. My folks don't help out either. Hence, why I'm stuck at home while I'm at college. And the roof is being pulled, seemingly over that wreck I had 6 weeks ago. Shitty minimum wage job, huh? About the time I'll have enough time for that is after the quarter is done. Then, *poof* about half the residents of Athens disappear, as that half goes home for summer. This immediately kills any demand for workers.
I love the university, but I hate the town when school's not in. There's nothing to do, no work to be found, and everyone except my step-mom knows that (she's always bitched about how I can't get a job during the breaks). We're the only major blob of people for 35 miles in any direction.

Are you sure that also counts for going in as an officer? I mean, It wouldn't matter too much if you had a desk type job possibly, but I know you probably wanted action.. But it'd be something?

Wanting action? Hell no. The thought of killing someone makes my stomach turn. I'd have a desk job, or a tech job.
ROTC trains officers. Upon graduating, an ROTC cadet recieves his/her commission and the set of brass bars that signifies O-1.
The major I talked was the recruiter for Air Force ROTC. He was the guy that said that bit about the prescription medication, and about the asthma.

What about a technician or intelligence position?

That's what I was thinking. I could easily do either just fine. But, they're not like that. They wanna make sure everybody meets these spiffy requirements. I'm guessing those who would be getting field assignments would have additional things to pass, but, I don't know.
Regardless of what I'm looking at doing in the military, I'm 4F. Period. End of story, door shut on my face. My dad said to ask about exemption forms or something. I foresee more of the same.
I'm gonna look into loans and such, and maybe do things with and at Good Works (it's a nice little organization for the homeless and those trying to get on their feet) over the summer if all else fails.

My father was a Captain in the Air Force. He suggested I try to get an exemption form or something like that.

go to the odjfs office closest to you and sign up
also go to their website http://www.ohioworks.com
and http://www.stateofohiojobs.com
there are tons of entry-level jobs there
and also you can get examined for more
advanced jobs as well. Go to the website,
then write down the job orders then either
call them or go to their office and someone
will give you the information you need to apply
for the job. I was in a dire situation and I was determined
to get a job so I went there every other day with job
orders and sent my resume everywhere until I found
the job I liked :) And I was hired! Granted, it pays $8.50/hr
but it's better than minimum wage and I like to do tech
support :)

I am going through a similar experience. My mom already has our house up for sale and plans on moving out after I graduate from high school (this June), leaving me high and dry. My sister found an apartment, but I don't want to live with her. I don't want to live with either of my parents. I am up shit creek without a paddle. Originally, I intended on working for a year or two, and save some money towards college. Seeing as how I would probably blow the money on games & DVDs, I wanted to enlist in the military, where it would be legal for me to kill. Anyway, I had asthma when I was young. I had it for a few years and then when I entered my teen years, boom, it went away. And now boom, my chances of legally killing someone just went away. I USED to have asthma, I am fine NOW. Damn military.

I know, it's stupid. They're just worried about having a solidier suddenly start coughly and hacking on the battlefield; he won't be going anywhere, a sergeant or two comes over to see what the hell is going on, and they'll all be easy pickings.
I might end up at a place run by Good Works for awhile.
