Amazing, it has that same glitch about the "enable cheats" command as the others and refuses to load games. This is getting friggin ridiculous.

If you're complaining about MAME32, then say so at their boards.

This numbering thing is ridiculous. Strictly from a programming standpoint, it's going to cause hell with the ordering of the versions. We already have to put stuff through a "human logic" algorithm to make it appear in order...and now we have dupes (0.100 == 0.1 == 0.10).

They've been wayyyy out of hand with that from the get go.
They update the damned thing twice a week, and I thought we'd see pi before we saw a number closer to 1.0 (it may happen yet kids, stay tuned).
While I respect the work, the numbering dealie needs to be under control.

That argument has been done to death already on the MAME board and pretty much everywhere else. The fact of the matter is that that versioning method is standard practice in the *ix world. After all, I don't see you complaining that people are going to confuse kernel 2.4.2 with 2.4.20, or 2.4.1 with 2.4.10. The explanation, in the case of MAME, is that it's a release count. To whit, there have been 100 releases since the first version. I also defy you to find someone who has confused a version of an emulator that supports 6 games with a version of an emulator that supports over 5500. Furthermore, it's their project, what do you care whether they call it 0.314159 or 0.chair?

It is under control. There is a source-only update once or twice a week, and after enough source updates have been condensed, the revision count goes up by one. Like I said in response to SwampGas, it's not a decimal number, it's a revision count - just ignore the 0. and you'll be fine. Also, what is wrong with updating an emulator frequently? People bitched before the devs instituted the source-only updates by saying that they couldn't see the latest changes often enough, and it also led to people inadvertantly working on correcting bugs that had already been fixed between major releases. Now people are bitching that it's updated too often. What the fuck is wrong with you people? Is there no pleasing you people?

so long as they keep making the most awesome arcade emulator ever, they can call it "FISTING CUM WHORE .6969" for all I care.

Cool, but I don't understand why they're so afraid of a 1.0. It doesn't signify a completeness, or even a product out of beta/testing phases. It's just a way of staying organized with your versions.

See, now we're exactly on the same page.
Unless of course, they're building an emulator to take over the universe and parts of New Jersey....in which case we could all be in trouble.

I think you are missing the human aspect of this tiny problem. My brother is pretty much computer illiterate, and loves using the emulators. He hasn't picked up on arcade roms yet, but I get the feeling that'll happen before long anyway. So when he says "what do I get?" I have to reply with the "Get MAME v0.100, not the one that was released years ago, the one that released this year." He'll then reply with "well why the hell is it still the same number?" I'll retort with an "I don't know, that's how they are doing it."
My point is, it's easier to talk about in a human, vocal sense then it'll be in the writing, internet sense.

I don't. I was just making the point that I think it's ridiculous. If they want that, then call it "MAME Milestone 100" or "MAME Release 100". If you're never going to advance the version, then do something that makes sense.

These are MAME users we're talking about, of course they'll never be satisfied. They're like ninfomaniacs, only that they're guys and have no women.
It was a joke, jeez

Look. Every single emulation site that carries MAME is going to refer to it as 0.100 and not 0.1, same as they referred to version 0.10 as 0.10 and not 0.1. Unless your brother is severely mentally retarded, he's going to download exactly what you tell him - to whit, 0.100. What's more, he doesn't exactly have a choice. No emulation sites have 0.1 or 0.10 anymore, and to download 0.1 or 0.10 he would physically have to read the words, "Older MAME versions" and then click on the link, and then see 0.1 in the list of old versions and see that 0.1 was released on 1997-02-05 and then still not be dissuaded from downloading it. Fact is, nobody's going to be downloading the wrong version "by mistake". It just isn't going to happen.

Oh well.

Right, and in that sense the number to the left of the decimal is used to denote a major revision. Maybe that would have been appropriate at various points in the past, but right now there are little steps being made with each revision so the change belongs on the right hand side, maybe behind another decimal point if it's minor enough. At least that's the system I'm most comfortable with.

Releases should be ordered by date anyway, not version number.
