I just accidentally ate a real chicken patty (my step mom mistakenly bought them instead of substitute)... first time I've consumed a significant amount of meat since I declared myself a vegetarian.

It was unavoidable and mistakes are bound to happen, but I just breached my own contract. I don't play by hard and fast rules anymore... It's sort of distressing me. *sigh*

And it didn't even taste that good. /wwwthreads/images/icons/frown.gif

I've never understood vegetarianism. Could you please provide me with reasons/ideals/etc., so that I don't do or say something stupid and offense in the future?

Everyone has individual reasons, but the major categories are three:

1. Morality - (I.E. It is wrong to kill an animal or to cause one suffering.)
2. Environment - (Meat production is a horrendous waste of resources and produces much pollution and waste. 1 pound of beef takes 1,530 gallons of water to raise, whereas 1 pound of wheat takes a mere 50 gallons.)
3. Personal Health - (Many studies have shown that meat and animal products have an overall negative, or at least nonpositive, effect on an individual's health.)

Some are vegetarian strictly because of 1, 2, or 3. My reasons are a blend of mostly 2 and 3, although 1 is a nice plus.

It'd be nice to see other people adhere to it, but I usually don't have the energy, will, or wish to try and change people.

I keep on hearing this, but I never see the effects spoken of. If that's the trend in human evolution, when will the hunter's mind and body go away as well? Hopefully soon (as in, noteable change happening within the next 10 generations), if that's the way we're headed.

Ok, I was just going to post that I don't care. But what the hell, everyone has to care about something... So here I go.

How about that 1 in 3 Americans are obese and that heart disease is the leading cause of death here in the US? These two afflictions are unheard of in many Asian countries with rice/plant based diets.

People don't hunt for food anymore. They buy little individually packaged chunks of stuff they know as "meat". Where it comes from, it doesn't matter to anyone -- it's like they're buying bags of Doritos. Even at the slaughterhouses, no "hunting" goes on... Animals are bred and mercilessly executed as quickly and efficiently as possible. No survival instinct is involved.

It doesn't count, when I was in the navy I had quit drinking for like 6 months and was bowling and reached for my soda and accidentally took a sip of beer and it suprised the hell out of me but I realized I hadn't screwed up my dry spell, since it was a mistake and I didn't know it then it doesn' t count and as in your case the beer also tasted bad to me.

I'm a vegetarian for the same reasons as icenine0, and it all started after I coincidentally didn't eat any meat for about 2 weeks. My digestion improved dramatically, and my heartburn all but vanished. When I also learned more about the aforementioned environmental effects, I decided to start avoiding meat from then on, and I'm happy I did. Although one time my Dad asked me to help cook dinner for him and some guests, which included ground beef. After sticking it in the pan and hearing the sizzle of the greasy flesh, as well as the raw smell, I honestly started to gag. It's hard to deal with meat after not having it for so long. I can imagine how icenine0 must feel after having eaten the stuff.

Exactly. I'm a Japanese major, and part of what brought me into the vegetarian fold was seeing how much healthier they are than us Americans, and linking it to their diet. Sure, they enjoy beef and pork every now and then, but usually in low quantities. Fish has always been a crucial part of their diet, but of all the meat out there, that's by far the healthiest. You can buy fish fat in pills, for crying out loud.

I also think it's interesting that just about every Japanese exchange student I know gained 10 pounds within a month of arriving here, and they also lost that much after going home for the summer.

Look a Europe'e eating habits lots of meat, grease, and fats but lower heart disease than the US. why? Not compleatly sure but one of the biggest diffences in USA and the rest of the world in food is Sugar. We put it in everything.

I was going to point that out, but, I had to go to work. Oh well.

If we keep on this current trend of military build up, we'll eventually blow ourselves to bits. Survivors will be devoid of our spiffy technology. Then we'll have to hunt again.

Come to think of it, there's a good chance these bad effects never really showed up in earlier man since they didn't live as long as we do. Eh. No big.

How about that there are a lot of fat vegetarians, not to mention the fact that you can pass off meat all you want, but sitting around without physical activity and eating cheetos (but no steak) all day isn't going to help someone get thinner.

One thing I've found is that the longer you go without eating meat, it tastes worse and messes with your body more.

Gotta hit'em in the head, gotta hit'em real hard
First you gotta clean'em then the butcher cuts'em up
Throws it on a scale throws an eyeball in a cup

Suum (http://www.aros.net/~paladin/suum.jpg), however in no circumstance would a vegetarian diet with comparable nutrients be less healthy than a meat diet. Therefore, I don't have a personal reason, besides gluttonous pleasure, to consume meat.

It certainly takes more resources to raise meat than plant-based goods...

Oh, true enough. I'll be the first to admit, I do like a lot of vegetarian meals. There's nothing I like better than making a Bleu Cheese Chicken Salad using those Morning Star patties. Mmm, lettuce, damn-near-chicken, bleu cheese, hot sauce, and ketchup.

I would probably be a vegetarian, except there are certain types of non-vegetarian Indian food that it would not be moral for me not to eat.
Ha! Untangle that, filthy vagabond! Who am I talking to? I don't know.

Taking note of your sig and everything, eat this instead:

12oz. medium-well New York strip, maranaded with A-1 sauce and a good year of sherry, sautaed with French onions and portelbello mushrooms, served with potatoes Au Gratin, and with a bottle of Joillot

Hmmm....could someone confirm/refute the following counter-argument to vegetarianism: - "Men who eat steak produce more testosterone, so have greater muscular capacities, ergo are healthier and fitter" This was in a respectable newspaper, and is interesting, even if irrelevant considering the detrimental effects eating red meat can cause.

I suppose it is an exact equivalent of drinking alcohol to help prevent heart disease.

It's also interesting that there are so many vegetarians here (a few people who have posted on this thread and I also know Fla_Flash to be vegetarian)... myself, because I'm religious, I don't believe that death is always a bad thing, but I try to choose free-range chicken and eggs as often as possible (mainly for moral reasons, but also culinary reasons) and I often cook meat-free dishes by choice, because I have a vague wish to have a healthy diet.
