I want to know if there are any portable audio players that support MIDI. Almost all of my music file are MIDI files, so it would be very annoying to convert them to MP3's.

No, there are not. Though you could probably build one if you found a PIC with the MIDI instrument samples on it. I have no idea if such a thing exists though. Cheeck out MintyMP3 for inspiration.

Only thing I can think of is that the GBA can play MIDIs if you have a flash cart. The program does a passable job...it does a GREAT job if you consider that the program is under 100k.

Good point, hadn't thought of that. My, er, dad's wife (don't really feel like calling her stepmother) has a really nice cell phone that you can put MIDIs on, and I don't think this is an unusual feature on anything over the bottom-of-the-line phones.

That's right enough. If your phone's capable of playing polyphonic ringtones (which really are just midi files, as far as I can tell), and you have Bluetooth or a data cable, you're ready to go. Even my little T610, with it's whole 2mb memory, can probably still hold anything up to 100 tracks.

All that you need to check is whether a hands-free kit will let you play audio through the headphones rather than the speaker. If it does, you'd do well to look up Skullcandy (http://www.skullcandy.com/linkChooser.php?urlLocation=link), whose jacked adapters will let you hook up your own headphones. And it's still much cheaper than buying a dedicated player, too.

You might want to look into getting a PocketPC or Palm device. I'm pretty sure there are software MIDI players for those.

I concur though, that would be very cool. Perhaps we'll see a software MIDI player for the PSP someday. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

Using a PSP as a MIDI controller would be really cool, although it'd require new cables and such...
