Right now I'm 14. I remember a time that i was 5 and playing my first NES. My favorite console, as a "good ol' reliable" was the Sega Genesis. What was your first console, and which was your favorite "good ol' reliable"?

Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 always brought a smile to my face back in the old days...

I've never heard of a Commadore 64. What games were there?
A couple of my favorites for the Genesis were Sonic 3 and Hellfire.
I played the Atari 2600, but I didn't own any functional controllers.

Atari 2600 with Combat. My uncle bought it for me back in like 81 or something.

Games that could entertain me for hours. You only need to go http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com/ here to figure it out.

But, my favourites were football and asteroids.

Let's see...first console was an Intellivision (Astro Smash, Shark Shark, and Thunder Castle baby, yeah!)

Not sure what you mean by good ol' reliable, but SNES I guess. I was a giant SNES fan back in the day, used to participate in the stupid SNES vs Genesis wars...back before I realized both were fine and good consoles.

I never got into those wars. I loved both consoles. I found the Genesis better for sports games (especially the EA's NHL franchise), and the SNES better for RPGs. Although i do admit i love Phantasy Stars 3 and 4 for the Genesis

The NDS NEEDS a portable Phantasy Star 4. I love that game.

my first console was the 2600, which belonged to my older sister. my ol' reliable console would have to be the SNES, the first console i ever bought with my own money. i worked all summer for one, getting the version that had Super Mario World, and Super Mario All-Stars.

First would really have to be a PC, I'm just about as old as the NES myself and I only ever played it at my neighbor's house once or twice (before his family became Amish and somehow got rid of it before moving to Pennsylvania to live the life!)
First real video game console I've owned was an N64 in, say 1999-ish. Been obsessed with it since. For several months all I had was Pilotwings, my brother and I would try to beat each other at that. Then along came Mario 64 and I thought it was the best thing ever... until I got Zelda 64 some Christmas.

Interestingly, I went to a family reuinion of sorts today, and me my brother and cousin were walking across town to get some bubble fluid to keep the toddlers entertained and we saw a store selling "CDs, Records, Nintendo, SEGA" and I thought that was pretty cool. We spent about a half hour looking over their shelves, everything from an old Atari 2600 console (and a whole shitoad of games for it) right up through NES, SNES, the full range of Gameboy and GBA, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, PS, PS2, Xbox (didn't see any Gamecube, though). I thought that was pretty cool, and I had to fight against picking up a copy of some of the NES games (I acquired an NES a few years ago, my brother found it abandoned on the side of the road!)

Atari 2600 was the first system I owned, followed by an NES a couple of years later. Combat was the shit!!

I started with a 2600, and went through the 5200 and 7800 before I got my first NES (Which was godly back then). After that, I had a Gameboy, a SNES, Genesis, and the last console I bought was the PSX.

Out of them, the NES and SNES are my all time favorites, though the PSX and Genesis (Hell, even the Gameboy) have a lot of games I consider favorites of mine. The Atari systems were OK for their day, but don't really stand the test of time like NES/SMS and later consoles do.

As far as modern gaming machines go, I lost interest in consoles after the PSX in favor of PCs. Considering a PC can simulate dozens of hardware architectures via emulation (And has native games that are more graphically impressive than any current console), it's definitely my preferred gaming platform.

NES and a genesis. though i had an Atari (i think a 7800) and a colecovision (burgertime!) at my aunts house (which became mine anyway).

Actually, maybe I should switch 'old reliable' :P to the Gameboy. For years I've carried a GB/GB Pocket/GBC/GBA/NDS...one of them with me all over the place.

We had an Atari (dunno which number) at my grandma's house for a long time. We had Miner 49er, missle command, etc. My friend also had some console that only played Root Beer Tapper (I dunno if it was standalone, or it that was just the only game he had.) And of course my PC. I had a 286 in my room when I was 2.

Ah, good question....

GB Pocket I think. I used to, and still get, lots of video game gear as gifts from my family. :)

NES. SMB1 in second grade (1989). Memorable games that followed were Mega Man 2, SMB2, Legend of Zelda 2, and River City Ransom. Now that I look at it, it seems I started with the sequels before the originals...

My mom also had an Atari 7800 which I played with. There were 2600 games with it too, which were compatible with the system.

Nowadays, it's all just emulators and maybe the occasional Warcraft 3 game.

I'd still have to give it to my NES for being "reliable," in the condition I've kept it, it's kept working since I got it...a long time ago. :>

I'd have to pick Sega Genesis as my favourite though, but only because practically everyone I knew had one, including me...hard not to. ;>

i'm the same way, for years i was never bored =) metroid2, link's awakening and the oracle series kept me busy. then i got my GBAsp and my flash cart. then i was carrying an NES and a GB with me. =)

btw, does anyone feel that most games for the GB weren't really worth playing? they feel almost like minigames. i dunno, i think i've been spoiled with all the GBA games.

My very first was a SNES. Unfortunately, I sold it and a fairly large collection of games for a mere £50. I've since vowed never to do something so foolish again. The games I have right now are mine. Unless you're willing to offer me serious sums of money (think five figures) then you can just fuck off and die for all I care. The sale of that SNES has scarred me...

My consoles since have been a Game Gear (burnt out when I used the wrong power cable), a PlayStation (retired when I got my PS2), a Nintendo 64 (retired, but occasionally dusted off and brought back into action), a GameCube (active, I like playing Soul Calibur II on it right now), a PlayStation 2 (very active, this is my 'old faithful' despite it being quite new), and a GameBoy Advance SP (inactive since I never got that flash cart I wanted).

I'm currently playing Soul Calibur II (trying to see what the highest level in Weapon Master is, I'm up to level 80 right now), Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (does exactly what it says on the tin), and Burnout 3: Takedown (just fucking awesome in all ways).

You know I said it before the only games that were worth it for the original Gameboy, for the most part, are Zelda, Mario, Wario, Kirby, Metroid, Pokemon, SaGa(FFLegend), Seiken Densetsu(FFAdvenure), Tetris, and posably Castlevania and Megaman(but probably only Megaman 5). Although Rolan's Curse 2 is a pretty worthy game if you want a non-Zelda/Seiken ARPG.

Damn lack of money at the time. >_<

My console list from start to present:
1. Atari (I don't know what make it is, it's currently upstairs though, I'll check and revise later) - year unknown
2. Nintendo Entertainment System - 1986
3. Gameboy - 1991
4. Super Nintendo Entertainment System - 1992
5. Nintendo64 - 1996
6. Playstation - 2001
7. Playstation2 - 2005 (actually, next week I'll be picking it up)

Ahhh, memories, one thing is certain, you don't want to see the "games I've played" list...

My first was the 2600 and the one I played most was probably the SNES. A lot of my favorite games are on Super Nintendo.
