View Full Version : I give up

ZMD is such a broken piece of shit that I give up. w3 is coded SO sloppy with so many security holes and it's in such disrepair that it's not even worth salvaging.
I think we'll be moving to fudforum (fudforum.org) soon.

This is just too ironic... I was chatting with Gavin on IRC while you made the first of the three threads in testing about 5 minutes ago, then I saw this. This is the log during that time:
[03:48:02] <<z>Lenophis> ok that just FIGURES
[03:48:12] <<z>Lenophis> I reply to swamp saying his sig is broke
[03:48:15] <<z>Lenophis> and it's then magically fixed
[03:48:16] <<z>Lenophis> >:|
[03:48:51] <<z>Gavin> what's up wtith swamp not being able to converse with more than 5 word posts on zmd?
[03:48:59] <<z>Lenophis> no idea
[03:49:25] <<z>Lenophis> then again, he's swamp
[03:49:29] <<z>Lenophis> a unique character
[03:49:32] <<z>Lenophis> to say the least
[03:50:11] <<z>Lenophis> evil evil sig
[03:50:32] <<z>Lenophis> shut the fuck up while i'm working <-- I think he hates me
[03:51:19] <<z>Lenophis> wtf
[03:51:23] <<z>Lenophis> swamp has lost it
[03:52:46] <<z>Lenophis> and he tells us not to spam
[03:52:46] <<z>Lenophis> wtf
[03:53:03] <<z>Gavin> ew not desert scheme
[03:53:21] <<z>Lenophis> ;_;
[03:53:29] <<z>Lenophis> I dumped it after I got complaints that I was using it
[03:53:51] <<z>Gavin> the zd theme is so ugly though
[03:53:55] <<z>Gavin> it's like the main site
[03:54:07] <<z>Lenophis> one thing is certain
[03:54:11] <<z>Lenophis> change will never happen
[03:54:13] <<z>Lenophis> to my scheme
[03:54:15] <<z>Lenophis> or the site layout
[03:54:18] <<z>Lenophis> or to the board

shit, i just checked out the software (was thinking about skinning FUD to look like the wwwthreads) and they stick the entire board in a single 3.94 MB .php file... that might not be too fun to edit. Hopefully it will never come to that should you chose FUD.
edit: just checked into it a bit more; they actually include the image files in the main .php file that runs the board. if nothing else... strange as all hell<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Gavin_86 on 05/31/05 05:02 AM.</FONT></P>

Fud doesn't seem like a bad choice, to be honest. I like the layout of how things look and the forum setup. But why not phpBB? I'm sure you could find a nifty little layout for it <img src=smilies/cwm11.gif>

phpBB sucks

The w3 codebase is so sloppy that I'm not even going to attempt to fix it. The only other threaded software is FUD, and while I haven't looked at the code, it looks more responsible just from the interface.

what about UBBThreads?

Isn't that based off w3 codebase? Besides, infopop is dropping ubb.

you're the one that told me they are completely different, when I sent you UBBthreads "mark all read" files.

YOU: "COMPLETELY different versions...as in...it's nearly different software."

Well there's always vBulletin (I'm pretty sure they have a threaded forum option). I googled up threaded forums and found one called Phorum (http://phorum.org). As a guest, it goes into flat mode, but I would guess it can be threaded if you go into your profile.

So you're not wanting to use a tested and proven bulletin board system and, at least for the time being, will continue to use this sloppy system that's been in place way too long?

vBulletin has a threaded option (I think). I heard about a mod for phpBB being threaded...But I have yet to find it (It doesn't appear to be on their main website's hack and mod section).

there might be a mod for thread support (theres virtually a mod for almost everything on phpbb). problem is phpbb's mod system sucks (like most mod system) and any thread systems likely dont work on the latest version of phpbb
[/info you didnt want to know]
what do the ZMD members using threaded mode like about it anyway? i personally just dont like it on some forums (w3), and hate it on others (dA)

i love being able to see things as replies to the people that they are in fact replies to.
i hate having to scroll up and down the page a zillion times to figure out who said what to whom when.
threaded mode also tells me exactly which posts i have already read, and which ones i haven't. instead of trying to sift through the entire thread to find the last post i saw, i can immediately see, oh this is yellow, so i've already read it. and this, it's red yet, so i still need to read it.

thats always a great advantage... when members actually reply to a post when writing a reply to them. that didnt make sense, so, eg: i have a habit of not really replying to the post I quote in deviantart, but replying to the parent instead, or replying to multiple posts with the one post reply.
dont get me wrong, a threaded forum works great here, and I have no real problem with it, its just some places, where users couldnt be bothered to make the effort a threaded forum wouldnt fit in.
to me, posting on a threaded forum feels like more messing around than a flat forum, but I can stand it when the forums are fast and easy to navigate (like here).

I have searched countless forum scripts, and this WWWThreads and Phorum are the only ones I could find that are threaded or have the threaded option. Check out the attachment.

So what dumbass wrote that? Considering that the rom isn't even playable as of yet, and the game comes out in 2 months, I would really like to know whose bright idea it was to "translate it first".

" ZeroForum has more practical features than any other discussion board solution."
Yet all I see is features even older free versions of Invision Board already have.
I guess stability and control over it might be an entirely different story, but that has yet to be seen.
Why not use VBulletin in any case?

Sorry, didn't check your other post.
I guess that cover for control. However, stability can only be seen by actually giving it a real use. There is also the security holes issue.
I don't think a commercial product would have any substantial problem with any of those, but I guess you can't be 100% certain.
Or something.
