View Full Version : File sharing via routers...

OK. I've tried Google searching some terms, but can't find a very good answer.

Basically, I got me a wireless router and want to share files on my computer with a laptop I got. I mainly want to transfer them to it. I have been using AIM, but sending files over that to myself is tedious. Plus the "Send File" option makes this computer restart, so I have to embed them in the text and save the file as...

So: How do I do it? Both systems have Windows XP Home, service pack 2. I'm a noob to this, but once I learn, all is well.

Thanks.

First, you want to go to Network Connections. Depending on your configuration, it will either be right on the start menu, or under control panel. Right click your network connection you want to be able to share on, and choose properties. Make sure that the box for "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked. If it isn't, check it.

Now, I would recommend making the Shared Documents folder (should be under My Computer) shared on the network for both machines. Right click it, select the "Sharing" tab, and check the box that says "Share this folder on the Network", and choose a name it will be shared as.

Now, you *should* be able to just go to your computer, navigate to the laptop's shared folder on the network, and drop the files you want transfer into it. Then you just get on the laptop and move them from the shared folder to their final destination.

Just wanted to add to this post....make sure you have at least one shared folder on each comp. I haven't set anything like this up in some time, but from what I remember, I couldn't even 'see' a computer on a network unless it was sharing a folder.

nope...not yet....hit windows-break (pause/break is the toprightmost key of your keyboard), then click on "Computer Name" then click on Change. Make sure you give both computers different names AND assign the SAME workgroup name.

For example "computer1" and "laptop" as their computer names, "mynetwork" as a workgroup name on BOTH computers.

Shut down and restart both. Then you can do your sharing and whatnot.
