I'm sorry to bother you guys, but I really did spend lots of time trying to find the answer myself. Are there any recent versions of MAME that will record AVI sessions of the games?

The only (recent) version I've found that purports to record AVIs is EK MAME. In this, it does indeed bring up a list of all the codecs, but no matter which I choose, every "avi" that's created is 116 kB and obviously doesn't play. So there's probably something else I need to do, but I'm too stupid to figure it out.

Thanks.

Nope. AVI support was in an old version of MAME32 at one point, but it's since been removed. You won't convince the developers to add AVI recording support either, as it's just a crowd-pleaser feature that doesn't lend anything to the actual accurate emulation of a game.

FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) can capture just about anything into a video. Unfortunately it is commercial software, but you might be able to find an open source alternative or "other" means of making it work without limitations.
