View Full Version : Grandia PSX Game Setup Problems

Well, I've been emulating for a long time, but recently I decided to take a stab at PSX Emulation.
I've followed the general guidelines, and I got Grandia to work, but it's really choppy and the sound skips a whole lot. The Movies don't work very well either. Maybe someone has some suggestions.
I'm using an Intel Pentium 3 1.2Ghz Processor, 512 Megs of Ram, Radeon 9800, and my emulator is EPSXE with Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.5, Eternal SPU Plugin 1.40 ( I've tried the light version too. ) and EPSXE CDR WNT/ W2K core 1.5.2.
I am playing from a mounted Image of the file.

Try using the Peops plugin.
Also, your CPU might be a bottleneck. Probably time to upgrade.

Your video card is more than able to use Pete's OpenGL 2 decently, but your CPU is somewhat limited. Here's a few suggestions:
Resolution: 1024x768 @ 32bit (Fullscreen)
Internal X/Y: Leave it at high. (Very High X will make the emulator choke altogether, since it's not supported. Enabling Very High Y just drags the entire thing into the mud).
Texture Filtering: Standard.
Use FPS limit: 60
Off Screen Drawing: Standard.
Frame buffer effects: 2
Framebuffer upload: Standard.
Screen filtering: Disabled.
Shader effects: Fullscreen smoothing > Level 2.

Screen filtering in particular is very CPU intensive, but using the shader to do this is very fast with a Radeon 9800. Also fully emulating
framebuffer reads/writes will tax the living hell out of your CPU.
Hopefully these settings will make it run decently for you.

I'm not certain what your settings in EternalSPU are, but try enabling SPUasync if it's not enabled and that *may* help you. Btw, the difference between the light and full versions are (I think) that the lite has a few features that are disabled and it outputs sound at a somewhat lesser samplerate, lowering CPU usage but lowering quality also. At least I think so...Castlevania's sound quality was lesser with the Lite version I thought.

Well, I took everyone's suggestions, and I'm seeing a great improvement over the original setup I had, which I beleive was just default stuff. The sound skips a bit here and there, and the voices sometimes stutter, but it's definatly a huge improvement over what it was originally.
And as most people say, emulation isn't perfect, right? :D

You might also give the PEOPS SPU a try as well... I've noticed some cases in the past where it seems to handle better than Eternal SPU, and I use it pretty much exclusively these days unless the PEOPS one gives me trouble.
