Municipal Broadband?

Lately I've been hearing of municipal broadband service. It sounds very interesting to me since the only somewhatly cheap carrier is BellSouth's DSL, but they require you having long distance service to even get it. I sure hope something like it comes here, then my internet problem would be solved!
