And I'm talking the big time. Your funds are now virtually unlimited. What do you do with it?
First thing I do is put myself, all my cousins and family through college. I finish school, and spend two years with a small group of friends traveling the world to hit every major brewery and museum on the map. When I returned home, I'd start working on a series of creative projects, putting forth ideas and delegating the management of them. I'd publish my mom's book, start my dad's resturaunt and begin work on my brewpub. Spend the next years settling down with a wife and kids, studying, traveling, writing and brewing. I'd give back to a lot to cancer research and I'd put money into the online communities that struggle for funds and bandwidth. I'd get involved in the movie business, and ulitmately start world wide organization called "Umbrella Corp" where I'd do extensive research on the viral enhancement and human capability.
Joking at the end there. You? You can be altruistic, but think about what you'd really do for yourself too on this one.

hmm, I would probably buy a house, furnish it, build a killer PC, pay off all of my debt, finish college, then invest the rest of it so that it can gain intrest

Two chicks at the same time. ;)
I'd buy out Microsoft, release all of its software's source code into the OSS community (under the BSD licence), sell the company's remaining assets, move to Ibiza and buy the entire island.

Buy a house, and another one in the woods with lots of land. Then I'd start an anti-cancer organization called Fuck Cancer, which would try to get young smart-ass kids to donate money for cancer research. I really hate cancer a lot. It has basically no redeeming qualities at all.

I would do nothing. I would sit around, with my life paid for, and do nothing. Maybe buy nice things. I don't have big dreams, but then again, I just failed a Calc test and found out that I'll have to take the class a THIRD time, so I'm a little down right now.
I really don't like computer science anymore. I don't enjoy programming, I don't enjoy math, and I guess computers were really meant to be more of a hobby than a profession for me, but non-science majors are at the same level as burger flippers at McDonalds. English major? Great! Take this sheet of paper and fan me off for $8 an hour.

I've already decided this LONG ago (in fact, you might find me talking about it on ZMD a while ago).
50% of post-tax proceeds are donated. The rest is invested. I have about 40 or so investments averaging a total investment of $2,400,000 that I'm DYING to jump in. Average gain is about 20% every 2 months.

I would pay off all the debts of my best friend, and family, buy them nice houses and make sure they never have to work again.
Once all my loved ones are taken care of, I'd probably buy a small house near them and enjoy their company (not having to work = more time for best friend and family).
Oh...and I'd buy me a puppy. :)

1) Pay off all my family's bills, friend's bills, and my bills.
2) Build a neighborhood for just my friends and family in the USA and build me a house or two in each; England, Japan, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, and Italy so I don't have to come back here unless it's to visit my family/friends etc that don't live with me overseas.
3) Put at least 33% of my total wealth in mutual funds or somekind of long term investment.
4) Build a car park garage with about 200 spaces.
5) Buy all the cars I've wanted since I was a kid...which doesn't consist of stupid Ferrari's or Lamboghini's...that's GENERIC. CLASSIC cars, everyday cars with superchargers or turbos in them. Something unique and not generic.
6) Start up a company to help fund the utility bills my neighborhood would generate.
7) Die happy knowing my friends and family are taken care of.

Go back to college, get a nice house, probably make sure Julia and her daughter, and Kevin are taken care of (get her a bigger apparetment, or a decent house...despite everything that happened I still care, and if I had unlimited funds then why not?), perhaps see the world...make my own adventures somewhere, buy my brother a guitar signed by Jerry Garcia :P, pay for the bills of my parents so they can enjoy life without worry, find a way to meet Shigeru Miyamoto and ask him to sign my copy of the gold cart NES Zelda 1 (to add to my collection of Zelda games), also I'd love to create an animation, or at least create a story and see it come to life in a way such as that. Pay all the licensing money that would be needed for there to be an OS-tan OAV. :P
I dunno, can't think of much else...of course find myself a nice woman to spend my life with...perhaps help some of my friends around here out, maybe donate a whopping huge sum to the development of Zsnes and to DeJap, PocketNES, and all those programs I love. :D

You misinterpreted my comment, then. I'm trying to look at this from a realistic, job market standpoint. The fanning comment doesn't mean *me*, I mean an employer, because that's all your degree will be worth to them. How do I know this? I substitute for someone when they go on vacation, and am perfectly capable of doing their job, which they've been doing for a few years now. He has a plaque on the wall with his degree: A batchelor of arts in Journalism. Yet he's doing an unskilled job.
Again, don't get me wrong..I'd love to be an english major, or something of the sort. However, I also realize that these degrees are mostly worthless, not based on their own merits, but in their marketability. There's simply more demand in the science and technology sector, and that's where the jobs are, at least, where I live.
It's like saying I want to be an author, or I want to be an actor. Great dreams, but the people who achieve them are probably not you. It doesn't supply food on the table, or a dependable day to day job. So you end up getting out of college with a degree that nobody really wants, and end up working yet another unskilled job, or become a teacher, and we all know how great THEY have it.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Dunno, actually. I don't see a lot of practical application to it, but then I can't see a lot to astrophysics either. I think it depends on the job and the area of english you're in. You're almost certainly right that an English major would have fewer options than a comp sci major.

I thought about my reply here for a full twenty four hours.
I'd remake an old movie..but change the storyline slightly. It'd be all about this sleepy little Ohio town and this vacationing couple (I've yet to cast the parts) travels through and gets lost. There's this abandoned farmhouse in the countryside and they (and their small son) take refuge due to motorvehicle trouble. Pretty soon a strange fellow named Torgo (to be played by bmecoli) stumbles upon them and explains he "looks after the place while the master is away".
Then the sheriff, (I've got SwampGas in mind for this part and SpaceTiger as his deputy), having recieved a disturbing number of missing persons reports, starts patrolling the countryside, looking for anything suspicious. Well, to make a long story short, the main plot line is there's a young conservative who orates people to death or until they join the republican party. Once the voter registration card is signed, he releases them with no memory of what happened.
Wanting to stay somewhat true to the original, I decided the multi-wife thing has to stay. (With that in mind, I'm hoping to get Lillymon to star as the rebellious one). So I give you Danoz:The Hands of Fate......ah, nevermind.
I'd probably just buy a house, a boat, take care of my family and invest.
And come up with more stupid movies to remake.

i'd learn the stuff i'd always want to know, i'd buy a house in japan, england, germany, france, and ireland. i would set up research for medical technology (cybernetic implants/ limbs, enhancments, etc) i would learn the languages requred for daily living in the above. i would make sure my family is secure financially and that i had the best damn file servers ever.
if i had any money left i would invest it to make more money to protect my future

Good topic and believe it or not I've thought about this before.
I think I would buy myself a nice home in the mountains and a super satalite internet/tv setup.
This might suprise some people but I would find out where swampgas lived and show up with the best available home server and pay off 10 years with his choice of ISP and give him $10,000 to keep ZD running for the forseeable future.
I would buy between 10,000 to 100,000 acres and just fence it in and make it conservation land which is absolutely untouchable for any reason other than animals and plants just living in a private habitat without and human interversion except maybe to give it a minor juststart at the beginning.
I would get all the medical stuff done I have put off for the past ten years or so.
I would give most people I was friends with at least $10,000 for being a good friend, my best friends would get $100,000+, and family would each get at least a million dollars except my grandmother who is 87 who would live with me in my new home in the woods and have a nurse and servants on call for the rest of her days on this planet.
Last but not least I would buy me the best weed available in the world and have a sexy half naked babe hired just to pack my bowls.
