Just disable Java and Javascript. It's not ZD's fault that it needs advertising to run, and I guess it's the will of the marketroids that we disable all the nice extra features of our browsers and go backwards in the name of selling products.

I have no problem with them advertising (even though I distinctly remember the numerous reassurances not so long ago that ZD would never runner banner ads or anything like that). It's entirely understandable. I just hate dishonest, underhanded, fuckwit advertising methods, like popunders. If you're going to advertise, have the fucking balls to do it directly to us. Don't be pussies about it, that just makes more people hate it.

It's odd - this site is the first and only so far to give me popunder ads with Firefox. Not a good sign...

Download the Adblock extension for Firefox from this page (https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/). See this thread (http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=techtalk&Number=253724&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0) for configuring it. Adblock is much more efficient than Firefox's pop-up blocker.

OK, first, blocking your assholish intrusive and dishonestly implemented advertising is not stealing from you. It's refusing payment. There's a difference. Not that you've shown a great record for grasping subtleties in the past.

Secondly, did you ever think that if you weren't using intrusive, annoying advertising in the first place, people might not block it? Lord knows I have deliberately excluded a number of sites from Adblock simply because their advertising is done in a respectful manner and I believe that they and their methods deserve support for that. I don't begrudge you having to use advertising - it's perfectly understandable. But like I said, it's dishonesty and intrusiveness that makes people block ads in the first place. I'm sorry if your banners and text ads aren't making enough for your liking, but that's hardly an excuse for being an asshole about your advertising.

Oh, and did you ever think that by putting more intrusive and more numerous ads on your site, you may well actually be driving more people to block them, rather than getting more views for them?

What do you pay to access this site (which hosts gigs of files, and is a massive archive of emulation history...you have NO idea until you've seen it first hand), first of all? Seriously, I'd like an answer.

Second of all, have you noticed how the ads change randomly? Maybe that's because ZD doesn't control directly the ads that are served to it? (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this was the case).

What's your point? I've already said I have no problem with the site advertising, and it's perfectly understandable. It's just the more intrusive and underhanded methods I disagree with, such as popunders. And anyway, your argument sounds awfully like "well, they offer you all this stuff for free so they can do whatever they want" which is patently bullshit. I don't think that justifies intrusive methods at all. It's a perfect justification for advertising, though. Surely by advertising in a manner that shows some respect for the viewer the advertising would be more effective, right? Granted, I'm assuming these ads pay by the click-through and not per serving.

Well, if ZD has no direct control over the advertising - particularly the popunders - then I will humbly withdraw my complaint. Regardless of where they come from I'll still disagree with popunders and their ilk as a form of advertising, but if SG and co. have no control over it then there's no point giving them a hard time about it. But I was fairly sure - I stand to be corrected though - that while sites may not control the specific ads that are served, they had some level of control over what form the ads took (banners, interstitals, popups, popunders, etc.).

And for years there was either no advertising or minimal advertising. Like I've said all along (except for the first post), I have no problem with them advertising; considering the costs that must go into hosting, and the sacrifice of time and effort involved, it sounds perfectly justifiable. But the ends don't always justify the means.

And if the advertising had been implemented with respect for the viewer then they wouldn't piss people off, nor drive them to block them, and would probably be more successful, assuming, as I said, they pay per click-through and not per serving.

You really don't seem to be listening. Go on, explain to us exactly how preventing you from generating revenue is stealing that revenue that you didn't get? Where's all this money that's been stolen? Lord knows the people blocking the ads don't get it, and you never had it in the first place to have it stolen, so exactly how is it stealing?

Well, you've got a point. I wasn't really clear before, where a couple of potshots were taken that should've been specified as being taken at SwampGas rather than all the admins, and for that I apologize.

The main thing I was turning back was the implication earlier on that because the site offers free access, that justifies using any and all forms of advertising, which is a completely specious argument. That, and the fact that no-one seemed even remotely willing, even after I actually started thinking before I typed, do address the points - why use annoying, intrusive advertising methods (particularly when SG's justification seems to be "Block the ads and I'll make them more annoying" which makes no sense because the only people that will affect are those who HAVEN'T blocked them) when advertising in a manner that shows respect for the viewers would, logically, be more effective.

But since it's become clear that SwampGas is quite obviously not going to care or reply, this thread's really become redundant. I'm just honestly surprised he hasn't deleted it yet or banned me.

Are you really that stupid? I said, repeatedly, I don't see any problems with advertising. But surely it would be more effective if it wasn't so completely annoying, intrusive, and disrespectful of the audience. More to the point, if popunders and other shit like that are what's needed to run the site, how did it survive all that time without them?

Here's a thought...if you don't like it go away. No one's stopping you from accessing ZD, no one's putting a gun to your head and telling you to stay. If you don't like the ads then move on. You'd lighten the bandwidth load a bit anyway when you leave. Until you run a site of this caliber yourself don't tell someone else how to run it--even then don't do it anyway because it's RUDE. This is the internet you can find what you need with google if you don't like it here.
