My Dell Insiron 2600 has upgradable ram and system ram....how do you get to the system ram to upgrade it? I can't find the instructions on what screws to undo anywhere.

I work with a couple of the Laptop guys at Dell, I'll ask them tomorrow. Do you have a link, or anything to show me what it looks like? if its REALLy old, they may not know about it, as they've only been with the company for about a year and a half.

That's the upgradable memory...not the system memory.

Once again..that's not the SYSTEM MEMORY. That's the upgradable memory. Right now it has 2x64. I need 2x256....one I can access...one is not user servicable. I need to know how to get to the other one.

Well, the thing with system memory is this; it's usually soldered ONTO the motherboard. Even if you thought about resoldering new chips to the mobo, it's doubtful the board would support more than what is already on there. That's why you get the upgradable RAM slot.
I'll ask the guys at work regardless, but I doubt you'll be able to upgrade it.

It has 128 ram...and EVERYONE knows that XP chokes on anything less than 512.

Well OK, but that doesn't have anything to do with your ability to upgrade the onboard RAM, Swampers.

I was just expressing my disgust. The laptop is AWFUL...I have presentations to make, people to impress, and not enough money to get a laptop of the caliber I need to keep a good continued income.

well, since the onboard RAM in unupgradable (from my knowledge) did you ever consider running a barebones win 2k (with a majority of the services disabled)
or hell, you know linux... put a light linux distro on there

Just what a potential client wants to see...a busted ass copy of Win2k or some weirdo nerd operating system. That'll be SURE to impress them and get me the gig, not to mention how well Linux supports Windows programs.

What part of Dell? I use to work for them a few years ago...I hated it. I really found out what pieces of shit they are. Only Dell worth buying is a server...
And yes...our call center was flooded with Dell notebook calls that were...shall we say...ridiculous...and they refused to send out replacement parts until they talked to at LEAST 3 agents...and those agents all had to come up with the same conclusion...award winning support my ass. I'll never touch a Dell...ever...if given one I'm selling it on ebay with a starting bid of $0.01 with no reserve.

Heh, I used to work in Tech Support as well. Now I'm in Reliability.
Mechanical Life testing, Accelorated Life testing, etc. Its actually a pretty fun job. I see my boss once a week in a 15 minute meeting. It's pretty swanky.

firstly, what's so wrong with win2K? Also, it's not busted when you disable useless services... it's optimised
and why the fuck would your clients care about how pretty your OS is... god if they're like that then you should just get a (god forbid) powerbook
and when it comes to linux... there's probably some sort of open source software alternative somewhere

You are an inexperienced child and a dumbass. I suppose you'll walk into the interview/presentation wearing a ripped t-shirt and jeans....because "what does it matter what you wear, so long as you know your stuff", right?

first off , I dress up for interviews, secondly... for fucks sake I was trying to offer you an alternative because it seems as though system memory cannot be upgraded.. all I as trying to do is HELP YOU OUT, even though you always give me shit
hell, if you';re so hell bent on using XP, then why don't you just optimise it so that it just uses less memory?
oh wait... no you won't... because you're getting advice from the most unpopular member here... wow how shallow of you

Sam, I'm not taking sides, but in his defense, he was (originally) trying to help you.
This is what you need to do to get to the system memory, which, by the way is NOT soldered onto the board. I actually have a 2600 from what my workmates tell me. There is another RAM slot underneath the keyboard on the laptop.
There should be a few screws you can see (on the bottom of the machine) that look like they would screw into the control panel (close to the LCD panel).
Remove them, and look behind your machine (with the LCD closed) you will see two screws on the hinge COVER. One on each hinge. remove them, and you should be able to pop up the control panel from the right side. You should see a notch there that you can fit a small flat-head screwdriver into.
Once you have that up, you can flip forward the keyboard, and there is one more metal piece that you will see, remove the screw(s) for that metal piece, and you will see another slot for RAM.
I believe the RAM slots both support up to 256mb of RAM per slot, with a max of 512 for the machine.
hope this helps. please dont yell at me.

oh, I guess you werre wrong originally... heh, but even if it was soldered, my suggestion would've helped a bit

Well it is a bit naive to suggest installing Linux... But what would be so bad about an optimized Win2k install?

Well, they aren't allowed to sell any parts from the lab, because Dell is a bitch and tracks everything, so I can't help you there, sorry.
Maybe your best bet would be eBay? I HIGHLY recommend AGAINST going to Dell's website and ordering RAM.

Is there a way to upgrade the CPU? Hard drive is user servicable so that's an easy swap. What about the video? I saw the attachment of the LCD to the video...so I assume it's just a module underneath that. I'd really like 1200x1024 here (1024x768 is max).

What the hell are you running that makes it choke on anything lower then 512? I've been running on 256 for a longass time now, and it's pretty damn fast.

Does this guy have documentation on how to completely rip apart the laptops? The cover for my screen is cracked (figured I'd pick up a dead one and switch the lids)...and I'd like to know how to swap out the CD drive (it's not easily removable like the floppy drive).
