I like to think I've a CD collection to cite jealousy in the hearts of many a man, but there's still a few I'm less than proud of being associated with - including, but by no means limited to:

Autechre (used to be a hardened fan, but I'm not really feeling the love anymore. It's been an embarrasment throughout, though.)
David Gray
James
Kraftwerk
Morrissey (though I'm happy enough to admit to The Smiths, for some reason)
Queen

*sob*.... don't judge me.

My down-to-earth solo guitar playing friend never looked at me quite the same way again after he saw the shiny special edition copy of "Thriller" sitting on my nightstand some time ago. To hell with him, though. In fact, after having made this post I believe I shall listen to it tonight.

Why on God's green Earth would you be at ALL embarrassed about listening to Queen? They're like one of the greatest bands ever. Top 10 for sure.

That's like being embarrassed that you like the Beatles.

Well, ever since I was a little kid I was a big fan of the Monkees. I will freely admit it, but I suppose it is a little embarassing. I do own albums from some of the other bands listed here (like Queen and Linkin Park), but I'm not really sure why I should be embarassed about it.

I'm genuinely embarassed by some of the songs I sing along to on the radio, however. Avril Lavigne, Sophie B. Hawkins, and N'Sync are examples of this.

80's music in general
2 songs by the Backside Boys
1 song called "Ice Ice Baby"--ever heard of it?
BeeGees (and some other disco)
Gwen Stefani
Britney Spears...only a few tunes of hers.
Rammstein (because my co-workers call me a derrogative german ethnic slur)
Techno/Dance/Trance/Rave in general...not very good to admit to listening to this as a heterosexual 25-yearold male where I live (considering it's either rap or country around here).

I'd go more specific but that would mean going through my massive cd collection...lol...I'll pass.

Yeah. To me it's a sort of shit rock/rap hybrid. I really hated them when they first came out, then gradually (after much subjection to it) started to like a few songs.

For example, I wouldn't dare tell any woman I am interested in about it.

Their musical compositions are quite good, I think, but I guess they get a hard time for bringing a formerly "edgy" style of music into the mainstream. There's not a lot of depth to their lyrics, to be sure, but I wouldn't expect much from a band like that. U2 is just as shallow and I doubt many people would be ashamed to admit to liking them.

Alright then, Led Zeppelin, their lyrics are mostly pretty shallow. If you tell me Led Zeppelin sucks, we can just stop discussing this now because I'm not going to respect your opinion.

What do you think "deep" lyrics are? Stairway to Heaven has shallow lyrcs? Does Kashmir, or Ramble On?

I won't say they suck at all, I like most of what they did. But they are notarious for stealing other bands riffs, lyrics etc.

"Deep" as in complex. The vast majority of Zeppelin's music is pretty simple-minded. Stairway and Kashmir are gorgeous, but let's not forget other classics like "Whole Lotta Love", "Black Dog", or the Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."

I don't think Linkin Park is anywhere near as good as Zeppelin or the Beatles, but my point is that lyrical simplicity can work. Anyone who can't appreciate shallow music from time to time needs to lighten up a bit, if you ask me.

I dunno, maybe I'm just seeing it differently. My first exposure to Linkin Park's music was this intense acapella rendition of "Crawling" (not done by the band themselves, of course). I can see how the actual recordings sound less genuine (they're very slick), but I still appreciate some of the music behind it.

Twisted Sister
The Distillers (at least that Sing Sing Death House album, haven't listened to others)
Dire Straits

I don't know...that's about it really...I honestly don't find most pop music catchy, just formulaic...it doesn't hook on to me like its supposed to. Of course, everyone thinks any pop music more than 2 years old is lame, with it never occuring to them that the music they like right now is, in fact, also lame. Also I can and do admit these, although I can't really defend them, except for Dire Straits, because Mark Knopfler is one of the most amazing guitarists ever in terms of just plain understanding of how to play with precision, and how to build up tension and release it. The album Love Over Gold sounds totally unique...Dire Straits most definitely did "sell out" later though.

Tell that to the millions of people who like them. You just have a habit of saying "this sucks" without actualty adding any substance to back up that claim. Though, I respect people's opinions...I however don't really respect anyone's opinion that just says "this sucks" or "that's horrible" without actually saying any specific realistic reasons.

Oh and BTW, U2 nor Linkin Park suck. As with ALL music you should at least try listening to it with an open mind.

Also (in response to another post, to which I'm too lazy to reply separately), I don't think listening to Aqua is so embarassing. Their songs (at least the few I've heard and remember) are amusing and catchy, and make fun party music. Yeah they're kinda gay-sounding, but meh, who cares, they're fun.
