I just recently was surfing the 'net, looking for some NES roms. I stumbled upon imbNES, an NES emulator for the playstation. To run these games on my PSOne, I need a modchip. First, I would like to know what modchip I should get. Second, are these modchips easy to install or do I need loads of technical expertise?

I have no personal experience with this but I don't think you're limited to mod chips. Datel (who make the gameshark/action replay) and several other companies have made disks that will allow you to boot backup and different region CDs. I presume they'll allow you to use emulators too, and there are a few tutorials out there on how to make an emulator CD for the PSX.
I found this while googling. I think it might work but you really need someone with more knowledge on emulation on the PSX to help: http://www.modchipstore.com/Playstation_Boot_Disc_PSXChange_V2_p_16136.html

I run imbNES without a modchip using the swap method. do a google search and you'll find plenty of info on it
it takes practice but it works
also a gameshark will allow to play the burned cd-roms as well
its a pretty damned good emulator, it has saves and everything

To identify which chip you need, take a look at this chart (http://www.chipzone.com/whichchip.cfm). Yes you do need a decent amount of technical expertise (and a soldering iron) in order to install a mod-chip.
As those other guys mentioned, alternatives to mod chips include the swap trick, boot discs (Breaker Pro, PSX-Change 2, Boot Disc), as well as external mods (Plug-in Modchip Gameshark, Game Enhancer). All of these items are roughly the same price as mod chips.
One thing worth mentioning (considering this is Zophar's Domain and you mis-titled your topic as 'PSOne Emulation') is that you can test your imbNES creation by running it inside a PlayStation emulator such as ePSXe or Connectix VGS.

I was actually able to pick up a PS1 Gameshark at K-Mart for $3. It works great for ImbNES (which blows my emu out of the water in terms of speed)

Which method do you use? I tried by going to the audio menu, putting in a local disc, exiting, and then swapping my imbNES CD in while the black screen is on, but it never goes past the black screen. When I put my CD in, it freezes.
Edit: My PSOne is a model SCPH-133

Dreamcasts are $20 at ebgames.com (http://ebgames.com)---no modchip required. I haven't tried imbNES, but from what I hear, NesterDC is much better.

Its a little complicated at first and will take several tries your frist time, but it will work.
Okay first off you must open your disc lid. On your model you should see a small button in the lower right hand part inside the lid that is pressed down when you close it. You must find a way to make this button stay depressed without closing your lid. I usually tear the edge off a playing card and jam it down in the crevice the button sits in until it goes down.
Than you take a legal PSone disc. Any will do, like Nascar Heat or whatever. Put the legal disc in the tray and power on your console without closing the lid.
Watch the the disc carefully. It will spin slowly at first, but when you see it start to spin fast immediately pull out the legal disc and put your copy in.
You can also try a google search for more info.

I like NesterDC the best of all the DC NES emulators I tried. Some of the others have compatibility it does not however, so you may find a few games you want to play that won't work...of course, the only one I can think of is the obscure Urusei Yatsura NES game I have. :P
