What the title says. It would be an interesting conversion to make, unless they add gbs support for the next Highly Advanced version. What do you say? Also, shouldn't there be an automated ripper for GBS?

I'm not really familiar with GSFs... but I think that would be possible. The real question is: "Why bother?"

I find it unlikely that automated rippers for any [rippable] music format will never happen. The process that's involved with ripping tunes takes a human being with a brain /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif. Try ripping an NSF/GSF (or at least learn the general process) and you'll see real fast what I mean.

I can't speak for newer formats (GSF/USF/PSF)... although I don't think they'd be any different. But definatly for NSF/GBS... automated rippers just ain't going to happen.

You're probably right.. but that's not to say that there won't ever be a program that'll look for patterns that resemble music data and point you to it, making the process simpler, right..?

Music data is stored differently from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even from game to game from the same manufacturer. There's literally no way at all to say, "Oh, this looks like music data."

Exactly.

Bottom line is it's always going to take a living being that actually has a brain to examine and rip the music. Making a automated music ripper (or music format identifier) is parallel to making a universal ROM level editor. It's just not going to happen.

That's not to say there can't be tools which aid in the process or ripping... but the brunt of the work will still have to be done by hand.

I seem to remember that Caitsith2 mentioned that Highly Advanced didn't include GB emulation even though it is part of the GBA, so even if you did make such a conversion it wouldn't work.

It was zoopd who pointed this out:

Nope. The original gameboy uses an entirely different processor than
the GBA. While VBA, the emulator which Highly Advanced is based on,
supports the original gameboy, we removed all of that emulation
code. Expanding HA to play GBS would almost be the equivalent of
writing an entirely new plugin. Personally, I don't have any
interest in adding support, and I wouldn't suspect Caitsith2 does
either.
