I've been using NESten to isolate sound channels record .wav's of sound effects from regular nintendo roms. Is there a similar program for snes? I've tried snessor, but the sound dump seems to pick up very few sounds, and the ones it does get are ones used in making the music. I'm looking for the sound effects. Anyone know of a way to rip snes sounds to .wavs or .mp3s?

I don't remember having a problem with Snessor ripping all the samples from a ROM - it can rip sounds at the wrong pitch, though, making them sound totally different. I managed to rip the lazer sample from Starwing with Snessor and used it for lazer fire in Elite III: First Encounters. It's the same sample they used for weapon fire in the original Transformers cartoons <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I suppose if Snessor does fail you can boot up an emulator and ROM and find it's sound test screen - some soundtests are enabled by cheats, then use some sampling software to pick it up.

ZSNES lets you disable sound channels with F5 - F12, iirc. Don't think it has a .wav dumper, but you can open up a wav recorder in the background and record that way (I've ripped sound effects from SNES games this way before).

I haven't been able to find a good .wav recorder, what do you use?

I think you get a shareware version of Cool Edit 2000 / Pro or whatever it's current incarnation is. There should be an adequate one that comes with your soundcard too.

If you have Nero, it comes with Nero Wave Editor which is rather nice for recording.

I love Cool Edit (96, 2000, and Pro)...I use it for most of my sound editing and even sound effect creation. And the new one (Pro 2.0) can open and edit MP3s as well.

... I thought Cool Edit Pro was bought out by Adobe - it's Adobe Audition now. Yeah, that happened in May 2003. :)

Here's a method I've been using for a long time: First I dump an SPC from the very beginning of a sound effect in a game. Then I play it on my SPC player of my choice (I highly suggest SNESAMP), disable the sound channels until the sound effect is only left, and then I log it a a WAV file. Simple.

SNESSOR95 is much easier.
Grab it here at ZD.

Edit: Nevermind. Seems that's already been covered.
