I am not a big hacker, either.
You should try Metedit for hacking Metroid.
You can find it here:

Happy hacking!

Yeah, yeah. Sure, you can be management and I'll be labor. That sounds great. Send along a 30-minute brainstormed list of good ol' ideas so I can spend hours and hours of actual work implementing them.

No, seriously, ideas are a dime a freakin' dozen. You'll have to learn some more valuable skills to contribute if you want to be part of a team.

If you want someone to do the whole work for you, you are gonna be flamed. Unless you are an expert, nobody will join you. First read some tutorials, then begin hacking. Post your work on Zophar to let people see if you can do something. Maybe then some will join you, but you have to show them some work of your own.
You should read "Definitive Guide to ROM Hacking for Complete Beginners" by InVerse.
There you have a lot of questions answered, along with your question.

Best help you're going to get:
1) MetEdit is a level editor for Metroid. Very easy to use. If I remember correct, it also had the problem of making all moved items retrievable over and over again . . . If this is the case, someone should know of the fix (I saw one hack that didn't have this problem).
2) Tiles for enemies are not compressed, so they can be changed quite easily in a program like TileLayerPro . . . Scenery *may* be compressed (which would make it impossible to do unless someone's feeling really generous). Then again, it may *not* be compressed too. Can't remember.
3) I will be willing to help in finding things such as HP values, palettes, etc.... (ie- you do the hack, but I'd find stuff you can add in).

Hmmm... I wonder how easy it would be to make a version of SABS for Metroid? Fewer enemies.

Ya, I'm kinda like that, too. But the Metedit level editor is very simple to use (I'm not the expert AT ALL in graphics hacking) the only hard part is using your resources. The game recycles it's rooms in each area. In other words, it's like a giant puzzle where you have to get every piece to fit. You may have some good ideas but you've got to have some genious ideas to make your ideas go together correctly. With time and patience, you could do it yourself, but if you do need help I don't think I can 'cause vacation is almost over. Good luck.

Haha, like 6 years ago old. Speaking of which, anybody spoke to Demiforce lately? I haven't talked to him since before Radical Dreamers was translated.

I think I came in around the time of Snes96...but I remember people bitching about not being able to check out the latest version of VSMC because TheBrain basically wrote his own OS and disk format or something and it was like next to impossible to copy the disk or something (?!)

He actually did it? I just remember him talking about it, and some people trying to get him to add stupid shit like TCP support so they could use IRC inside his planned OS... since apparantly IRC and 8 color SNES games are all computers were good for...
