I went to PC Club today and the guy there told me that their $99 5700 GeForce AGP graphics card will work for (ie) Halo and should work for PSX emulation. Is this true?

I've got a 5700 Ultra and I can vouch for that. It plays Halo smooth as glass at 1024x768 with max features, and seems great from the limited PSX emulation I've been doing on it. Make sure you don't get ripped off on the price though. I paid $78 for mine, and it's an Ultra.

Well, are there games that like, have way better graphics than Halo? I'm asking this because all the other cards are so expensive. Basically, I'm asking... why are the others so expensive?

5700 ultra is old spec now. it'd be good for older games but nothing new. can't run dx9 codepath and can barely run dx8 at a decent level.
if you want something cheap that will last you for a while i'd say try to find a used ati 9700 pro. you could possible find a new one for around $125.00 and it will last you for years to come. 3-4 times the performance of a 5700 easy.

Simply put, the cards are faster and can handle much more. Grab a GeForce FX5700 or find a used 6800 if you can.

Haha. My 5700 Ultra beats my friend's 9700 ultra by about 2-5 FPS in every game we tried (Doom3, HL2, N64 Emus, and Farcry) on the exact same PC. Please bother to figure out what you're talking about before posting next time.

I'm looking for a new video card also.
What ever card you get be sure the memory is 128bit not 64bit. Other than that set a max price you want to spend and shop with it in mind.

I wasn't trying to say it was way better or anything, I was just trying to point out to dark_preacher that the 9700 Pro isn't "3-4 times" better.

Ya, I was thinking about getting that because I think MSI makes one with that VIVO out thing. That way I could have a composite TV out instead of half-assing it to work with a S-video to composite cable I made and it end up looking like crap, where I can't read any of the writing on the TV. Does that composite out on the VIVO thing work with composite TVs?

cepeep you are full of shit. 5700 barely compares to a 9700 and it runs at partial precision. have fun looking at fp16 pixel shaders.
fx series can't even run dx9 at full spec. i fail to see how you could deem that as a futureproof card.

5700 may not have the frame rate as the 9700 but check this benchmark and watch how your precious ATI cards get eaten alive by nVidia cards...including FX ones (see 5800 being better than 9700). Check this picture. Good day.

Well, I have a Geforce FX 5700LE (256MB) that I bought for around that same price...everything that I've tried to play runs quite smoothly with it (including Doom III, which came as quite a surprise ;>). I think that a good processor and motherboard combination would probably be more helpful in the long run, though.

Ya, when I get a job, I'm might save up for one. Is BFG - Asylum GeForce MX 4000 Graphics Card any good, or is it just like the Radeon 9200? As much as I hate to, I'm gonna have to buy from Best Buy because I got a $50 gift card to there.

LoL, wow lots of people hate where I work. Best Buy's not so bad when it's NOT the holidays. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif> Hope you get a good card.

IMO, if you want a half-decent GeForce card, never, never ever buy anything from the MX line... they're stripped "value" versions of better cards. It's worth the time and money to wait and save a little more in the long run and get the unstripped version.

It sounds as though he isn't using optimal drivers, the 9700 ranges should be faster than the 5700s of the same type (pro-pro u-u etc)
Either that or his display settings were set up differently to yours. Did he have AA/AF turned on?
