The "[User] is typing..." thing. I find that pretty creepy. I mean, I didn't even realize it was on by default, and all those people who IM me who I start to type something back at, and then decide against talking to them and pretend I'm away from the computer could see that I was, indeed, typing a respose? Fuckin' creepy. I do remember there was one mode of ICQ back in the day where you were talking to someone, and it sent the text as you typed it, so if you made a typo, they'd see it, and then see you backspace it. That's even creepier. What's with all these annoying creepy features in IM programs? Oh yeah, the other thing is, Idle. Why do I want the world to know when I'm at my computer? What if some burglar sees that I'm away from the computer, and breaks into my house and steals my cigarettes? I mean, fuck.

I hate that too, considering that sometimes I can type a whole paragraph, realize that's not what I want to say, and delete it all, or type something in, delete it, type something else in, delete it...half an hour later, a message gets sent. I wonder what the person on the other side thinks while i do this.

I never liked that feature. I didn't know you could turn it off. Someone can go "wait, you were typing then you stopped. What were you typing?"
None of yo bidness, bitch

Nah, actually I'm not a fan of that thing either. If I decide not to say something, the person could be sitting there waiting for it. Can I turn that off, actually?

I actually like it. Prevents crosstalk and lets you know how long to pause before bringing up a new topic. Without it, there've been numerous circumstances where someone's considering what I've said, but I think they can't think of anything to say, so I bring something new up.

yeah me too. i hardly ever use AIM, but instead normally use msn (which just about _everyone_ uses in Australia) which has that same feature. on kopete (kopete.kde.org) i can see when someone opens or closes a window and when i say something about that it freaks the other person out like "wtf??, how did u know that?!?!11". its fucking funny , i mean, umm stupid...

but yeah i think that icq thing where u see what they are typing is creepy, what if you write something you dont want them to know by mistake?, opps...
